koukie Posted September 27, 2011 Share Dont get Avid, I have the CR Carbons and they are not nice, makes noise, feels crap and they tend to fail on high speed.....(evans epic) I think the Formula R1's would be your best bet in the weight department. Then the new XTR's are also very nice I had them on my 29er.
Bike Mob Posted September 27, 2011 Share Formula R1. Light and great modulation
Nimby Posted September 27, 2011 Share Formula R1's - very light with fantastic power. If you're going XTR for your transmission you may as well use the XTR brakes as well - I understand they are a giant leap forard from Shimano's previous offerings. In my experience - anything but Avid
Bman Posted September 27, 2011 Share dont touch avid's - if your building a scalpel ultimate i take it budget not an issue so go for the Formula R1's - unbelievable braking system, lightweight and powerful!!
DJR Posted September 27, 2011 Share Why not Avids? I've run Juicy 5s for at least 3 years with no issues and minimal mainenance and they have more than enough power on a very hard working trailbike. Are the newer Avids different / worse?
Vinnydabutcher Posted September 27, 2011 Share 1. Hope X22. XTR3. Formula R14. XT That`s my recommendation in that order.

Are the newer Avids different / worse?i had the XX's on my bike for a while - found stopping power really wasnt great, often very noisy under breaking, and just felt for that price they were really terribly over rated!! Dr Drey Posted September 27, 2011 Share I have a set of Avid XX on my Scalpel......never had a problem! Must be because I bought them on the Hub.

Are the newer Avids different / worse? Can't comment on the 5's and 3's but the XX and CR models are not great A.They are a beeeeatch to bleed(but maybe that is just me)B.They use Dot5 fluid which chows up internals(little rubber o-rings)C.They modulate and have the stopping power of cheaper sets...kinda like rip and grip stuff
