Would appreciate comments on which is best.

I have a sigma BC 2006 MHR now.

Polar has no GPS. I own a CS 500 (regrettably) and I recommend you get a Garmin Edge 500 - cheaper, has GPS, works better + has better software and less buggy synching.

Is the Polar CS 500 that bad? Will check out the Garmin now quickly

Update: New version of Websync software got released today, so I 'upgraded' hoping I would no longer need to reboot my mac every time I want to get data off the unit.

Turns out the new and improved version does not synch my data at all - it tells me the synch is done but nothing is there - and even better, it has also deleted all my data from the unit - meaning my race data from yesterday is kaput.

A new level of awesomeness from Polar.

If you want to have a :

..heart rate monitor for spinning, running, cycling etc

..speed sensor on bike

..small unobtrusive unit

..once every 2 year battery replacement

..simple to use watch

..bit of a bitch for some to download

that is the CS500

If you want a :

..mapping of your ride

..instrument glorifying your bike

..re-charge after every ride

..have your excercises reported on Facebook

..compete with others or yourself on your routes

download Endomondo.com for free on your GPS enabled cellphone

The unit is huge.. are you sure we're talking about the same device? I have started scraping my knee on it when I am out of the saddle.

At races people come up to me to ask why I am riding with a tablet pc attached to my handlebars.

1st battery replacement came for me after about 3 months of use.

Nope.

But the Garmin 500 is THAT GOOD! :D

I was an old Polar fan. Road for almost 10 years with various, S510, S710, CS600 etc.

Then in 2010 I got my Garmin 500.

No more "HR not picking up"

No more issues with infrared and sound linking and all that fancy non-working stuff.

You can pair the Garmin up with a Suunto HR strap, SRM strap, Garmin (Any ANT+)

Power meter? No problem....powertap, SRM, Quarq....bring it.

Various software programs out there that you can use. Some free, some pay.

Good luck!

 - love my Garmin 500 for all the reasons mentioned! Also got all sorts of stuff just lying around abandoned in the cupboard since then.

+ for a garmin, hated my polar...HR was buggy(picked up sometimes and sometimes it didnt). Battery in the watch went flat in 6 months and then it's a mission to get replaced by polar, and it wasn't even a cheap unit.

Nah garmin of niks. I would recommend getting sporttracks3 to analyze your data with though, super program and its for free

I love my S720i. Bought it when i bought my 1st bike 5 years ago. I replace the battery once per year and the strap every 2nd year (not because i have to but just because). I always had good service from the polar guys. Was contemplating getting the CS 500 for my roadbike but will reconsider now. Bought the Edge 405 last year and used it for 3 weeks. Took the polar out the cupboard and gave the 405 away.

Im happy with polar. Its a quality product and has a good name internationally.
