Pietermaritzburg – Entries are still being taken for the road race of the Msunduzi Road Challenge in and around Pietermaritzburg as interest in the only African leg of the UCI World Cycling Tour continues to gain momentum.

The specialist time triallists have been rostered into startlists for the 27km time trial in the Lion Park area on Saturday 29 October, while the field for the 90km, 111km and 126km road race continues to grow daily with late entries.

Race director Alec Lenferna has confirmed the full closure of the road in the city from 06h40 until approximately 07h45 on Sunday morning for the start of the various divisions of the road race.

This will involve the roads from the start in Alexandra Park, out along Durban Road, New England Road, Boschoff Street, Bulwer Street, Echo Street, Ohrtmann Road, Manning Avenue out to Baynes Drift Road.

Once the last of the riders has left, traffic police and local authorities will enforce a partial road closure that will allow traffic to move around the area to the north east of the city around Albert Falls, New Hanover and Dalton where the road race is taking place.

"The directional road closure will mean that the left lane of the roads the cyclists will travel on in the direction they are going will be closed but the contra flow traffic can still move," said Lenferna.

"The R 614 and R 33 will be open to traffic contra flow to the cyclists (i.e. R614 – towards Wartburg & R 33 from New Hanover to Pmb) with points people directing traffic at intersections where traffic will cross. People can travel along R33 from Pietermaritzburg and turn right onto the R 614 when the road is clear of cyclists," explained Lenferna.

On their return to the race start/finish venue at Alexandra Park the race will be under partial road closure for the returning cyclists.

Local residents are urged to visit the event website at www.msunduziroadchallenge.co.za to familiarise themselves with the race route and to plan alternate routes if necessary.

The Msunduzi Road Challenge cycle race takes place on Sunday 30 October in Pietermaritzburg and is preceded by a time trial on Saturday 29 October.
