What to pack

Hi,

I am sure there has been a list like this but I can't find it now, hence posting. What do you guys pack to carry with you during a race (MTB specifically)?

I know it is dependent on the distance but trying to get an idea.

Things I carry:

Food/Drink

1. 2x Bottles of some drink (prefer this than a camelback & feeling like a pack donkey)

2. 2 x Energy Gels

3. 1 x Energy Bar

Tools

1. Multi-Purpose tool

2. Chain Repair Tool (no idea how to use this)

3. Tyre plugs (running tubeless)

4. Tyre Bomb

5. Tyre Levers

Anything Else?

No point taking a "chain repair tool" if you don't carry a spare chain link (the tool is a chain breaker to remove broken links, then insert the spare link and fix your broken chain) :-)

Happy riding.

I also carry latex gloves in case I need to help someone and there is blood involved. Just a thought. You can buyn

them in P&P.

A spare tube. Not every hole or slash on a tubeless tyre is pluggable.. A few cable ties, you will be surprised by what they can hold together. Keep the wrappers from your energy bars or Gu's as they cold patch a huge gash. Better make it more than one bomb... malfunctions do occur. A R50 note could get you out of a whole lot of tricky situations... I could go on, but I like feeling like a pack donkey, as I beleive it makes me stronger and has saved me a few times when I have gone over the bars or become seperated from my bike in mid air..

Ha - this fred is going to go on a bit.

Me, I commute. This is what I take (I also take it on races, 'cos I can't be arsed to unpack/pack stuff for the sake of 100g):

Spares in saddle bag:

Spare tube

tubeless repair kit

presta/schraeder adapter

small puncture repair kit (for tube if I have to use it, and it gets a puncture)

2 bombs plus ryder adapter (best one, for sure)

2 chunky tyre levers (the green ones that don't break)

Multi-tool with everything including chain breaker

Quick release chain link

Spare chain pins (get one with every new chain, but I use quick release links)

Camelbak:

1 litre go juice per 20km is my consumption - max = 3l in my CB. Current go juice is low Gi stuff.

Cheap Ryder tyre pump (is also light!)

Light rain shell

Odd gel or bar, way past use-by date (I hate them, but at least I know I won't starve to death for lack of food). If I intend to actually EAT the bars, I carry granola bars - they really work well. Break them into quarters and eat one quarter every 15 - 20 mins or so.

You might notice I REALLY don't want to be caught short when it comes to punctures...

pack for a race:

pump and plugs.

food and water(with some or other suppliment).

anything else and you are not racing but riding.

On I ride, I may even take a spare tube and tyre levers (maybe), a multitool (for fine tuning) lots of food and water, and money.
