Wilfred Posted November 19, 2011 Share Hi Guys Was hoping for some advice, please. I've just bought a Giant XTC 1 29er, I need to change over to tubless but thinking of mybe upgrade the rims and tyres instead of just doing the conversion. Could you please shed some light on what my best options are here and is second had a option, also do I need to change the hubs when changing the wheels etc.I'm a little lost, so any advice would really be great. Thank you RegardsWilfred
arendoog Posted November 19, 2011 Share It is fine like it is .those racing ralfs are good tyres .Learn how to fix a tubes instead and put slime in them.If you want to convert tubeless geax saguaro are excellent. You will have to go exspensive if you want to feel a differance with new wheels .stans .crest ext
Oli G Posted November 20, 2011 Share If its got ralphs you should be able to tubeless convert them. I know quite a few twenty nineriders that have tubeless converted them and say they are brilliant.and Schwalbe are THE BEST TYRES (Clarkson pause) IN THE WORLD Your wheels are a little heavy but it all depends on what you want to spend. Some American Classics would be great. and i would say get new hubs as well not just hoops. Goodbadugly Posted November 20, 2011 Share Maybe this is not what you want to hear, but what is wrong with the stock wheels? Why not just convert them?
GoatBoy Posted November 20, 2011 Share I rode an XTC 29er - took of the tractor wheels it came out with and stuck on american classic hubs, Stans ZTR rims, DT swiss spokes withRacing Ralphs as tubeless - the bike was a totally different ride and the wheels made a massive difference. One of the other okes also commented that it depends on what you want to spend - sound advice. Good luck with the decisions.
Wilfred Posted November 20, 2011 Share Thank you for the replies. For what I am using the bike a massive saving in weight from changing wheels is not such a big issue. The main thing is to get them tubless for easier repairs, I can patch a tube but figure from what I've been reading and heard tubless is the way forward. It sounds like the conversion would be the way to go, thus keeping the good tyres and rims and keeping costs down. Thanks for the help. kosmonooit Posted November 20, 2011 Share Firstly are your tyres UST? Although some say normal tyres will work, its best to do it by the book and use the proper designed for tubeless tyres. Then you try tape the rims with Stans yellow tape (either 21 or 25mm), and using a tubeless valve & sealant, forget about that 'conversion' strip. See the Stans NoTubes.com web site for some videos.
