Stem bolts?

I decided to give my bike a complete clean and while at it I replaced the handlebar tape, derailleur pulleys and greased/lubed everything.  I also want to replace the stem bolts because they are rusted and look ugly.

I went to Action Cycles at Canal Walk and they looked at me like I was mad when I asked for six new ones.  They were even more bemused when I asked about Titanium bolts (wow, do they exist?).  They suggested I go to a hardware store to buy some.

My question is am I wasting my time going to bike shops asking for these allen bolts or am I being fobbed off?  Where can I get them?

Also, how do I keep them nice and clean without rusting badly?  Looks horrible.  I have a basic Ritchey stem, so it should be easy to get the bolts.

Straatvark, you dealing now?!  Where did you get them?  I would even settle for plain old stainless steel at the moment, if I could just get them...

Hmmm, nice red ones would look nice

My Scalpel got Ti bolts throughout. You loose weight, albeit not ALLOT, but the mental advantage can't be denied Big%20smile

I got stainless bolts of the correct length at a local bolt and nut supply store. All bolts on both tandems are now stainless.

OK, here is my feedback on the hunt for the elusive (standard) stem bolts:

City Cycles:  "Huh?  They only come with new stems.  Go ask a hardware store"

Hardware store: "No, sorry, but we have ones with normal screwdriver heads!"

Actions Cycles:  "Nope don't stocke them, but ask the Nut & Bolt co in Paarden Eiland"

Nut & Bolt co.: "Here are ones that are what you need except the washers are too big, the heads are square and the allen key size is smaller and the thread is slightly different"  Uhm, no thanks.

Willie Engelbrecht's Cycle Emporium of Delicious Bike Bits: "No standard ones, but how about Titanium ones at R40 a pop?  Nope, none of them either... Go to that bolt place over the road from Sanlam head office (WH - I forgot the name!)"

So I might be off to that bolt place (if I can remember the name or maybe Cycle Factory) if they have any.....
