V12man Posted September 12, 2013 Share So the saeco deal fell through as the machine he was offered turned out to be crap.... Anyone have experience with La Pavoni machines? Which one? They make some nice small lever machines and some good commercial stuff.
Beesrib Posted September 12, 2013 Share I can't wait to go home and make a nice cuppa. Finally bought a small krupps grinder and a stovetop thingy and some awesome beans.

Dirtbreath Posted September 13, 2013 Share The Nespresso pods are burning a hole in my pocket. What I am looking for is a small bean to cup machine, with plumbed in water supply and with no frothing wand. Does such a machine exist?
Redline Posted September 13, 2013 Share We have the small 2.5k type machines, first breville and now a russel hobbs.. all these machines are probably manufactured in the same shop. dial in the middel, wand on the right - alot of the components are inter changable etc and they all SUCK - not enough umphf to extract a proper expresso, milk frother thingy is just a sjlep so is it worth it to get something like this http://www.sprada.co.za/viewproducts.php?slug=smart-coffee-machine or is it just another glorified russel hobbs machine that will last 1 year and 1 day

What I am looking for is a small bean to cup machine, with plumbed in water supply and with no frothing wand. Does such a machine exist? Yes - but expensive - it is cheaper to use a small float valve for a fishtank level switch and do the plumbing yourself - this is sometimes possible if the tank has an external (to the machine) wall you can drill. Valve is like a tiny toilet flush valve. Dirtbreath
V12man Posted September 13, 2013 Share Its this one http://www.lapavoni.it/model.asp?id=47 I have used one very similar from La Pavoni - slightly bigger - they are very nice and compact too - temperature management is a bit tricky, but once you have it sorted out then they work well - small lever machines are very cool - one day when I grow up enough to have a dedicated coffee bar at home I want a vintage lever machine.... Be careful if you decide to import one - always check the voltages of the element.

Stick with a worldwide reputable brand - Jura is a good place to look... www.jura.co.za

cadenceblur Posted September 13, 2013 Share That's a good attempt. Looks like you've got the hang of your steam wand! Are you plugging two of the holes?
HappyMartin Posted September 13, 2013 Share Getting there with the art! Soon as my machine arrives going to have to give that a go. I assume I will be able to find a YouTube video for guidence?
cadenceblur Posted September 13, 2013 Share You'll find plenty of instructional videos on the net, it just takes practice though. Edited September 13, 2013 by cadenceblur
HappyMartin Posted September 18, 2013 Share Just received a call to say my Simonelli Oscar and MDX grinder can be collected tomorrow. Yeeeeeehaaaa. Too bad I am doing a ride to Clarence starting Friday and won't be able to use it. Will be taking my Aeropress and hand grinder along. You won't believe the coffee in Frankfort. I think it is Frisco. I've been told it's like R4 per cup.
V12man Posted September 18, 2013 Share What's effective price per cup for "decent" beans? I've been told it's like R4 per cup. R4.50 to R7 or more - BUT - that is based on an 18g double shot espresso - Nespresso is 7g, and if you do that, then R1.75/single.
