AM tyres... what you running?

patches

Recommended Posts

On saturday I ended up slashing the rear tyre (Mountan King Tubeless) and it died.

So I figured it's time to look at putting new shoes on the AM bike.

I'm wanting a combo that:

  • grips well in various conditions and terrains.
  • Doesn't weigh a ton
  • low-ish rolling resistance
  • long-ish lasting
  • oh, and tubeless

I know that there's nothing that will satisfy ALL those criteria perfectly. But here's a combo or 3 that I have in mind.

  1. Mounting King II 2.4 Protection (front), X-King 2.4 Protection (rear)
  2. Mountain King II 2.4 Protection (front & rear)
  3. Rubber Queen 2.4 UST (front), X-king 2.4 Protection (rear)

Those are just the Continental options...

So yeah... what are you peeps running that you have been muchos impressed with?

Have a look for some Spesh Purgatory's (if you can find some). Have just put some on the wife's bike and am very impressed.

The 2.2s are quite fat so can happily run them at he back.

Does the fact that they're called "Purgatory" mean they're not that good... but not that bad?

... or is it the fact that they're a good inbetweener, hahaha

But yeah... will have a look! And like you say... some brands are bigger than others. Like a Kenda 2.5 is way bigger than a Maxxis 2.5. My 4X bike runs Geax which are high volume 2.2s

Been running a set of Geax Sturdys for a while, the 2.25s aren't too much different in size to the Maxxis Ardent 2.4 I had on before. The ones I have are the non-tubeless type kevlar bead setup tubeless.

Just changed the back out for a Geax Saquarro 2.2 for slightly better rolling running up to Knysna (Doing the 80, need all the help I can get without borrowing an XC bike)

Nice! I'm also pretty impresse with the Saguaro TNT I'm running on the back of my 4X bike. I'll have a look at the Sturdy as a front tyre option

Don't know what tyre life will be like but the grip is much better than old MTN Kings. The new MTN King II's protection are also a good option.

im running 2.3 nevegal up front with a 2.1 slant 6 at the back.

was mainly being used as more on the xc side. but i liked the combination, the rear isnt so grand in mud clearly. but for dry hardish pack i have enjoyed it so far. rolls well too.

I run tubes so not sure of the tubeless options

I'm running mountain king II 2.4 protection front and back, tubeless. pretty happy with the combination, though I think I may go for a rubber queen up front next time. dunno why, I just think I'd like something meatier (not that the mtn king sucks) but I really haven't done enough miles to comment in detail, sorry :(

was considering the X-King for the back, but happy that I stuck with the Mtn king...

The ONLY combo to get! - but the 2.2's are ample wide enough

The tune of your tyre is mostly due to the flexing of he rubber against the ground and the airflow between the knobblies. The tune depends quite heavily on knobbly spacing and arrangement. On the MK II's, I don't think Conti put near enough development into the acoustics of the tyre - which is most noticeable at speeds above 30km/h.

currently have suguaro tnt at the back, workes pretty well.

Caution: DOES NOT LIKE WET ROCKS

but that's not really a problem in winter in gauteng.

front i have vredenstein black panther. very impressed with this tyre.

just make sure you run 1.8bar in front - they do not corner well on gravel at high pressures. (but it could also have been ID-10T error.)

very happy witht he combo - and on the muddy sections day 2 of sani, my team mate was commenting on my superior grip to his crossmarks :) :)
