Howzit

 

Due to the appauling resale value of 26inch bikes these days, I am considering converting the current 26 inch 2010 Anthem X2 I have in the garage into a single speed beast.

 

So my questions are as follows

 

1.) Has anyone done this? Tough?

2.) Chain tensioner? I see Yesss make a tensioner that will work. Possible to get this in SA? From who?

3.) Whats the estimate conversion cost?

 

I have seen some sites where they use an old derailleur in place of the tensioner. Is that a better way to go?

Did it with my Old Merida am 5000.

It’s pretty easy but you'll need a few bits and pieces.

 

As for a chain tensioner any old derailleur will do, I used an old LX I dug up somewhere.

At the front I suggest a proper downhill chain guide (e thirteen or similar). You could try get away with an old front derailleur set very low but if you’re serious spend the bucks.

 

If you know a mechanic try steal some old bits to keep the costs down.

Think me cost me R500 for the front chain guide.

you can get SS chain tensioners that have 2 jockey wheels and work similar to a normal derailer. Ask Josh at cyclist workshop in JHB he will sort you out

Now this is a conundrum...

 

It's a bit like putting bar ends on riser bars, wearing a camelbak in a road race or having a coffin saddle bag - theyre all good ideas but break those pesky unwritten rules of cycling!

 

On the one hand SSing is about simplyfying - dual sussers are the opposite of simplyfying...on the other other hand SSing is about not playing by the rules!

 

On the practical side - it should work fine - my advice would be to go the dynamic tensioner route rather than the static tensioner route so that the tensioner pipcks up any slack caused by the moving suspension.

I've just done this to my wife's bike, easy as pie.

Keep the derailleur, use a short piece of gear cable to pull and then lock it in position over the single gear.

One chainring on the front and make sure the chain stays on by using a chainkeeper ( like Paul or cSixx)

It helps to keep the chain fairly short, derailleur pulled rather forward, with enough slack to take up the rear suspension effect on chaintension.

Works very well, no problem

Chicks do not dig gears, they seem to not be able to chat as much if need to think about cross-shifting etc, so , she loves the new, simpler cleaner look and feel.

i have an old LX rear derailleur at home if you in Gauteng im In Edenvale if you want it you can have it. Its damaged and doesn't work as a derailleur but does work as an SS tensioner (i've used it as one in the past)
