LCHF - Low Carb High Fat Diet Ver 2

Recommended Posts

Also battled with cholesterol my whole life. Went as high as 12. Doc Thought I would die in his surgery. I was a vegetarian at the time. A little overweight. Now I'm thin and fit and don't check cholesterol anymore.

These people cannot even work out if butter is good for you or a poison. How am I supposed to sort out the BS from the facts if they have no clue what's up.

Been on LCHF since Jan

Before i started LCHF

Triglycerides 1.3

HDL 1.1

LDL 4.2

Total 5.9

Last week

Triglycerides 0.9

HDL 1.5

LDL 5.9

Total 8.1

Should i be concerned or is it normal.

It's such a complex subject that I won't try and give analysis/advice. But what's immediately positive for you is seeing the drop in your triglycerides.

Here's a nice summary from Mark Sisson on the ins and outs of reading a cholesterol test.

If you are concerned about the rise in your LDL, you can always ask your local specialist for a comprehensive test that can differentiate between particle size.

Last question: you've been on LCHF since Jan, but just confirm for me that you have removed the bad inflammatory foods from your diet? I'm talking about all grains (wheat, oats, etc), foods rich in omega 6 PUFAs, processed and fast foods (esp. almost all refined vegetable oils), etc.

Thanks Fitter. My energy levels dropped the first 3 to 4 months but it is back at where it was before i started LCHF lifestyle. Doctor wants me to take some medication, but i am not going that route.

Well the weight loss and energy bounce-back is positive.

The only medication a doctor would prescribe would be a statin or similar. Trust me you would rather take rat poison than a statin. And I take a statin daily (there are residual complications coming off them once you have been on them for a long time - and I am now in my 19th year on statins. But my dosages are low).

Keep doing what you are doing. My business partner is an MD and an authority on LCHF - he has a great book out on the subject - and he would give you a completely different interpretation of your results compared to your doctor. Remember that statins represent a 44 billion dollar industry to the establishment health industry - from prescribing doctors thru to pharmaceutical companies and dispensing pharmacists.

You're forgetting #1 - sugar.

Thank Fitter. The pharmaceutical companies are like "legal" druglords.

They will never back the LCHF lifestyle because they will lose too much money from Statin are Diabetic medicine.

What is the books name of your business partner.

Tombeej i have cut out almost all my carbs and sugar. Only doing a handful of cooked oats and honey in the morning. The rest of the day is carbfree.

Personally I think you should cut the oats and honey

Do you guys take any daily vitamin supplements, omega 3 etc?

1 teaspoon cod liver oil daily. Doc says it's good for the heart, my grandmother swore by it (proof enough for me  ) and it seems to be a good source of omega 3, vid D & A.

Also, lots cheaper than the omega3 capsules

Agree on the oats. One of those inflammatory foods. Full of phytic acid.

But for me, honey has its uses. One of the most energy dense foods around. Great for building up glycogen stores during a hard training block (like back to back hard rides or for those who do stage racing). I make my own home-made 'HF muesli' with diced coconut, macadamias, almonds and berries. Served with cream instead of milk and a generous serving of honey on top. Like you, I also like butternut or sweet potato for this sort of thing, but my home-made muesli is yum.

Day 5 on LCHF.....

I miss my diet sodas - a lot. I actually thought that the cravings would be for other things.

Side effects? Every morning (about 10 o'clock) I have this nauseous feeling but at about 12 it is better.

From previous experience I know that I do very good on a low carb diet, but I really struggle with the whole idea of high fat. Every time I eat something with fat my head goes into overdrive shouting - do not do it! Fat WILL make you FAT! But that is exactly what the world was brain spooling us for so long.

Well lets see what the weekend holds and how training is going to go just with water.

Keep going with it. This is going to be the worst time for you, especially in terms of your training. Accept that you're going to feel like you're going backwards before you start moving forwards. Stay strong though. Your body will fight you for some time. It has spent its whole life fuelled on carbs and doesn't yet possess the skills to tap its fat reserves for fuel. If you're strict about training on water only and sticking to your diet, soon your body will be forced to start laying down the new internal processes it will need to begin tapping its vast fat reserves. And eventually it will even start preferring fat as its primary source of fuel (for sub-max exercise). Woop woop! But this takes time. If you ride in a fast club group, maybe even spend your first month doing your own thing because you're going to get dropped. But if you keep telling yourself that many others have been through this same process before and come out the other side much the better for it, that will give you strength to tough it out.

It is called "The Decarb Diet" - by Howard Rybko. It pretty much encapsulates most of what you will require ITO taking your LCHF forward.

It's important for you to decide what you want out of the lifestyle. If it is weight control, then frankly your ability to regulate your weight will be almost exclusively determined by what goes into your eating regime. If you want to max out your feelings of wellness and maintain good health, then frankly, pretty much the same.

I also fall into a smaller group who are committed to this for the above 2 reasons and also because, as a coach of endurance athletes, I am convinced of the efficacy of stored-fat fueling for these disciplines. And the human physiology is so complex, we can only go on heuristic anecdotes as data accumulates. For these reasons we advocate initially attacking all carbs as a means of kick-starting the ketogenic process. This means avoidance of all things like oats and honey, if for no other reason than that it feeds the addictions and will have an insulin response that slows fat-fueling. There is nothing preventing us, later on, from reintroducing selected carbs into the system and monitoring our responses to them.

We also believe strongly in Omega 3 supplementation and Vitamin D supplementation.

We have been invited out to a Pizza joint with friends tonight. Wife doesn't want to go, she is concerned about stuffing up all the work done over the last 8 weeks.

So, will cheating tonight stuff the whole thing up?

After 8 weeks, this has become a lifestyle for us and we are feeling fantastic.

Advise please

You do not want to screw up the friendship - I would go and order a pizza with meat; peppers and cheese topping. Eat all the topping and leave the base.
