jeremy.king Posted August 6, 2013 Share Has anyone done the basic 50hr service on their brain fork? Just the simple lower, stanchion clean and oil replacement. From what I've gathered on the net it seems as though you just need to let out the air in + and - remove the 10mm nuts on the lowers tap out the uppers drain the oil, clean/replace wipers, replace oil and bolt lowers and uppers back together. Is there any more to it? (Don't wanna service the brain at all) I do not have an S-Works fork with the brain fade control on the uppers, apparently you have to reset the brain on these forks when you take them apart. If anyone has serviced successfully please comment.
FlashJordan Posted August 6, 2013 Share I have the same question regarding 2013 brain fork, not s-works but the brain fade control is on the upper?
droo Posted August 6, 2013 Share It's a Rockshox air spring and lowers service. Voids your warranty though...
Johan Bornman Posted August 6, 2013 Share Screw the warranty. Do it. Nothing special to it.
FlashJordan Posted August 6, 2013 Share Screw the warranty. Do it. Nothing special to it. Hi Johan So when looking up the ends of the lowers the bolt on the right tube is way down deep - how do you get to it?And by the way, when is your next fork maintenance course in jhb? droo Posted August 6, 2013 Share Use a 5mm socket type allen key on a ratchet with an extension bar on the damper leg, and the same with a 10mm deep wall socket on the spring leg. The manual's on the RS website, just ignore the bits about the damper.

Warranty covers very little, I've had my bike since October 2012 and spent R4700 on the fork already. (R700 x2 50hr services) and (R3300 to replace stanchions that had scratch on them warranty didn't cover). Tired of being ripped R700 every 50hrs is ridiculous. R 700 for a lowers service is a bit on the steep side. The 100 hour service I can understand being a bit pricey, that damper's quite a beast to bleed and recharge and you need specialised equipment to do it, but a basic lower leg service is simple. Ya very steep especially as a student. I send it in to Specialized at Stellenbosch from Cape Town. 50hr service is R700 and 100hr (annual) is R1500. Friend of mine with the exact bike and fork has had to replace stanchions and lowers spent R5k on his fork alone. So we want to rather do the lower service d.i.y so we can change oil more frequently as to minimise damage on stanchion etc from infrequent servicing. The upper legs will just send in to Spec. annually. What size wipers do I need to get, and is it 5/10ml in the lowers? 2012 sid brain Thanks for the help Edited August 7, 2013 by jeremy.king

Guest Smimby Posted August 7, 2013 Share I serviced mine, 2012 Brain....I just ordered the "Seal kit" from LBS but you dont need it at all for a lower service. It is bassically a Reba, and you need and Longer than normal socket for the Right hand side. All you do is to undo the nuts at the bottom, and not a lot of oil will run out but do a wrag or bucket handy. then tap the nuts at the bottom up, like you would do normally ( with the nut at then end of the thread) The RH side contains the brain in one piece, and I took it out and left it to the side..... Then the left you can take apart and replace the o-rings or just replace the foam rings and dust wipers on the lowers and assemble.... Make sure you have new washer for the nuts at the bottom and torque correctly....

The dedicated DIYer will find all of this out anyway, no point keeping secrets. (That said, there are a few things I'm not letting out of the bag...) There are still plenty of potential customers who aren't mechanically inclined, don't have the tools or the time, or just plain can't be arsed. I meet them every day Oufy MTB (Roadie)
