Ride around Africa

Jolandie Rust is a young girl who has decided to be the first person to cycle round the african continent.

As silly as this may seem she is in need of certain items to achieve this. Firstly, slicks will probably be easier than the mountain bike tyres she has. She is looking for basic bike repair items as well as size 7 ladies shoes with pedals and cleats.

Her website is www.jolandierust.com

You can also read about her expedition on this blog

If anyome has stuff lying around at home that they think she could use, you can contact her direct through her email off her website or pm me.

I have no interest in this other than she belongs to another network I belong to and I think she's a bit nuts, but then aren't we all.Smile

She's a brave girl. The guy who did it nearly lost his life on a few occasions.

Think he lives in Somerset West....Riaan something?

Yup, was done by a guy called Riaan Manser.

Good luck to Jolandie, but after reading Riaan's book I think she's crazy..

I agree, I think she's nuts too, but she is one determined cookie. and no it is not a nigerian scam. Riaan Manser did it and she has been in contact with him, but she would be the first woman to attempt it.

Mmmm, somewhat skeptical here, hope im wrong .  when i read Riaan Mansers book i regretted i did not know about his trip  beforehand, to have had the opportunity to sponsor or support him in some way.  Reading Jolandies web page though, all sounds very aspirational and all about dreams, wouldn't mind to know some more about her past, what shes done up till now other than dreamin, lookin for some more substance, I want to know she has some perseverance at least otherwise she wont even make it beyond the Limpopo,  then one can think about it..

  • 7 months later...

Wow...this certainly is interesting. Someone told me about this thread.

Thought I'd say hi.

Jeremy...I still have your light and jacket. I must just remember to return it to you!

It's fascinating to see what people can say about you when they don't know you.

So people...any questions? Ask me. :)

Jolandie, I read Riaan Manser's book. I got the impression that he was able to make it partly because he is a rugger bugger, physically strong and imposing, used to feeling physical pain and being able to push through it, and being able to carry himslef through the threatening situations by force of character and a leather skin back. If you read my thread on the Bike Nomads in SA Soon, you will see photos of Nadine, a 20 something woman who rode from Germany and is on her way down to CT as we speak, with her husband Sven, before turning back up through Africa to return to Germany on their bikes. Nadine is not your picture of supreme muscle cut athlete- more like your girl next door type. If she was able to make it, then you can. But check their experience in Senegal, where the men tried to separate her from her husband. Keep in touch through this post. When you come through Mozambique you will be riding right past my place at Xinavane, where you will find a warm reception in a cyclist's home, and where you can spend as long as you like to rest up.

This is a pic of them on the morning they set off from my place towards Swaziland via Moamba, which meant they were able to miss the hell ride through Maputo.
