Update on Nic Bac from Facebook,  holding thumbs for you Nic,

Update #3 on Nic: unfortunately it is not very good news. The doctors found some transverse damage to his spinal cord that had not previously been detected in the MRI scans. They say that this cut was not leaking spinal fluid ( we assume that to be a good thing) and they inserted a sleeve to prevent future leakage and promote the closing of the cut. The fusion of his back was however very successful and they are satisfied that his back is now stable. They are not committing to whether he will regain the use of his legs, saying that is up to him and the rehabilitation process which will start almost immediately. Sadly, it appears that spinal shock, which we all had hoped was the initial temporary cause of his loss of feeling and mobility, has now worn off, so his continued lack of mobility is now as a consequence of the spinal cord damage. The 15 rib fractures are all ribs that have torn away from the spine, which they worked on as well last night.

He can now at least be moved with confidence and we hope to be able to relocate him up to JHB within days (not weeks), where we will continue an aggressive rehabilitation process . We have not lost hope but we are also trying to be objectively pragmatic under the circumstances. Thank you all for the continuous outpouring of love, prayers and well wishes. Nic and the family at large appreciate it emmensely

Well that puts all other "problems" into perspective. This is going to be a long recovery, all the best.

Does anyone actually know what exactly happened? Did the medical team have a spinal board when they moved him?

Nic's case was an unfortunate accident.

Your issue can be prevented, good that you making everyone aware of it for future events!

This worries me as it is something I am concerned about doing the Van Gaalen marathon. I rode it with my boyfriend last year and did not feel safe in some of the more built up areas, along a river where people were doing washing and there are long reeds. I would be riding alone this year and safety is something I am thinking about....

Sorry to hear about Nic Bac, very sad and I hope he will fight for recovery.

My suggestion is post on the Ashburton thread or directly take it up with organisers. They definitely got time to take preventative / proactive action..! Sure you're not the only lady feeling that way.

Nic was very lucky as two doctors (brothers) were right behind him. The one is an orthopedic surgeon. He said that the paramedics didn't have a scoop (the stretcher that splits in half so as to slide in under the back). Not sure of the exact way things happened but essentially he advised that helivac was the only option. I assume they waited for the helivac & scoop before moving him.

It raises some serious questions as to whether the paramedics are effectively equipped & have sufficient knowledgeable to deal with serious injuries.

Clearly were not on the Trail as we had those giant red balls bumping into the bridge

Enjoyed the trail, had a couple of places were it was slow or backed up but nothing serious.

I was surprised/disappointed at the number of riders who did not bother clearing their tables. They left milk cartoons and energy bar wrappers everywhere. No consideration for the next guys wanting to use the tables. There were dustbins everywhere?

Mind boggles.

Day 2 waterpoint1 distance to waterpoint 2  ( Nandos)  is to far.  Lots of riders ran out of water on the climb to Nandos.   Some were getting pretty dehydrated. It was hot and slow going and   I suggest putting a water tank at the bottom of the climb where the spectators gather.

Agree with that, some nice gent was kind enough to open a water pipe with his wrench at one of the abandoned farms

Sorry, I disagree with Stevie here, its 27km between the 2 waterpoints and not exactly a secret that it will likely be hot & involve climbing.

If you imagine yourself having the ability to finish a 3-day stage race you should have the ability & preparedness to cycle 27km on your own devices.

I also find it a bit ironic how people don't want this event to become too commercialised  but at the same time demand improved facilities at the race villages. Don't underestimate how much those annoying sponsors contribute to expenses & improvements over and above your already high entry fee, without them the race will be more expensive and the facilities more limited. (Not agreeing with the Supergroup-group early seeding on Day 2 brainfart though)

the red bull truck has also been there just before the start of the big climb for the past 2 years...was it not there this year?

Don't recall the Red Bull Truck in 2013, didn't do the race last year so don't know about 2014, this year definitely not.
