I know it's all about the riders, but Doug Ryder must be pinching himself everyday at the tour. He's been with his MTN team for a while now (remember mtn raleigh energade dominating the local scene for a few years?), and it just doesn't get any bigger than this. Incredibly proud of my boys in white and black, take a bow sir.

check Steve Cumming's first reaction when he sees doug, priceless(you might have listen to it again to hear what he says, it's worth it).

Is it true that they are now second in the team classification?

The Boland Bank Cycle Tour of the 1990s was a popular end of season sojourn for many of the world’s top professional cyclists after a hard year of racing on the unforgiving roads of Europe.

The 1995 edition was no different boasting a line up that included the mighty Spanish ONCE squad who, along with Team Telekom and TVM were expected to dominate the race and earn some easy money.

But a young Cape Town rider had other ideas and in a week-long tour that came down to the final sprint in Stellenbosch, a plucky Douglas Ryder riding for the Old Mutual SA National Team held on for a nail-biting victory over a classy field of professional and amateur riders alike.

Now the owner of Team MTN-Energade, Doug kindly relayed his journey through the world of cycling from an aspiring pro to running a professional cycling team over a number of disciplines.

CRANK: Douglas, Team MTN/Energade has had some great results this year with talented group of largely younger riders. You certainly seem to have the knack of identifying and nurturing young talent – Jay Thompson, Daryl Impey and Darren Lill being the most obvious examples. How do you manage to identify young talent year after year? Would you say that you have found your vocation?

Love what Steve says to Doug in that hug. Shows so much about the team.

vid only has 3000 views - the team should be pushing this! That is just raw emotion laid bare(and the funny bit where he can't find his rider!)...i probably should have put a language disclaimer too!

Doug's stock has risen dramatically in the last three months. There's probably a lot of pride over at CSA but also some uncomfortable shuffles cos here is a man who is DELIVERING.

Douglas, you've made us proud!

CHAPEAU

Something to be very, very proud of as a SAFA.

Hopefully some politician won't spoil it.

I hope, there is a renewed commitment from MTN wrt sponsorship, because I fear they are going to have a hell of a time hanging on to the guys in the team. The patriotic Saffer in me says they will all decide to stay, but the lure of the Euro and the Pound is very difficult to resist

Worked with the man when he was our MS account manager many years ago, could not have been more deserving, he has been relentless in following his true passion and making a number of talented riders' dreams come true.

"Give that man a bells"!!!

What would be in it for them? Does Europe even know or care who or what MTN is, as they don't have networks there? The "branding exercise" might work for Saffers and Africans up North, but what would they gain? Now if Samsung were to step up to the plate...

Make no mistake I'm screaming as loud as everyone else, but the pessimist in me tells me it will be short lived in terms of the current title sponsors. eksemaarnet..
