Knee Injury

Recommended Posts

When i tore my ACL I was still able to train once the initial swelling went away as my muscles were strong enough to support my knee so i didn't even notice it until 2 months down the line when i went for a second opinion and MRI scan.

I ran a 19minute 5km trail race with a fully torn ACL without knowing it was torn yet.

However when i was cycling, on the up stroke i could feel the leg was not "balanced" as such and felt like it was wobbling under pressure. Running was never an issue though.

I have done my ITB's previously as well and that was sore but not what you are describing, however a bruised meniscus i think would give the symptoms you are getting. If you have bruised your meniscus, you should rest for 6-8 weeks (lots of ice) but if you have torn the meniscus it is a completely different story and could require surgery to fix.

You should really have it looked at by a knee specialist / ortho to get a proper diagnosis, it is worth the cost.

You almost certainly have ITBFS - I posted the stretch you need to do somewhere - just search for my post - and ice your knee a couple of times a day for 15min or so, and do the stretch a couple of times a day as well - instructions in the post.

OP in case you didnt realise this man over here^ really knows what he is talking about, I would listen to him.

IMHO ,based on various injuries including ACL and MCL reconstructions, MEAT is a better protocol than RICE. way better.

Agreed 100%... Cycling helps the most.... started cycling in my rehab and never got off the bike.

But first know whats wrong with ur knee before you tear the meat of your meniscus :)

I am not convinced the OP has ITB - but the secondary poster certainly... 98.25% sure :)

The OP still owes a photo...

Thank you to everyone... Really appreciate the feedback had help.

@V12man... Will definitely post that photo later tonight.

@Aurora... Definitely going to see a knee specialist regarding this, no matter how small or big my problem. I want to keep on cycling and running as fitness is a big part of who i am so if that means that i have to be off the bike and running for a couple of weeks or longer, then so be it.

Don't mess around, get it checked by a specialist.

I had a similar pain on the lateral side of my knee for over 10 years and only when I walked non stop longer than 15 minutes. I could cycle and run for hours with no pain but just monthly shopping walk caused ITB like pain.

Self diagnosed and procrastinated for 10 plus years before seeing a specialist, problem correctly diagnosed via MRI

Problem was a cyst on the side of the knee caused by torn meniscus.

Now I have no excuse not to go shopping....

Good luck and I hope it's a cheap and quick solution

Dr Danie Morkel at Vergelegen Medi-Clinic did my ACL reconstruction. An my father's, and my brother's. Incidentally all 3 of us in the left knee he also fixed my torn meniscus.

My boet went on to play varsity rugby, I went on to not play rugby, but my knee is hundreds. But a lot of credit goes to my bio and Physio. Always Respect The Rehab.

Dr Morkel also has an Epic medal in his trophy case. So he understands cyclists.

Dr Richard von Bormann

i used this Doc last year for my PCL reconstruction, same dude who did Greg Minaars ACL/PCL can't remember now.

If surgery is the way, there is One thing I can add which nobody or very few ever mention upfront and that is Pre-Rehab, if only someone warned me before the time.

ACL and meniscus repair.

Sometimes pre rehab is not easily possible - my (now very old) mcl, acl and pcl repair all at the same time would have been one of those (it counts as a rugby injury because it happened on rugby tour - but I fell down the steps - plakkies and water don't go together well)

I am curious why you think it would have helped if you didn't do it - did you have a poor result? Or do you think you would have had a better result?

the hardest part was the rehab the most excruciating pain ever...ever, breaking down scar tissue is not for sissys, i was in a straight knee brace for 10-12 weeks, massive atrophy like no tomorrow, nearly a year later & you can still see the massive difference in size. I think this is where pre-rehab would've been most beneficial. I used a physio for a while until i had +100 degrees range, then simultaneously started  using the the grucox rehab center at SSISA, just pedaling on those CPM bikes (continuous passive movement), once i had the range i ditched the physio & signed up with a Biokinetist, then progressed onto those Orange Grucox bikes for some serious eccentric & concentric pedaling enough to make a seasoned pro cyclist do the leopard crawl for the next week only the first time though.
