Event Name: Pennypinchers Origin Of Trails
When: 3 December 2016 - 4 December 2016
Where: Stellenbosch, Western Cape
Category: MTB

Stellenbosch is a mountain biker’s paradise with a network of trails that can keep riders entertained for days. So it makes perfect sense to host a two-day stage race in a town that is synonymous with cycling and world class trails.

The Pennypinchers Origin of Trails makes use of the existing network, while also adding in its own unique flourishes with specially built and event-only exclusive trails. The town itself is the race village, with participants encouraged to spend a weekend enjoying the pleasures of “Eikestad”. With world class restaurants, quaint coffee shops and numerous “watering holes”, it’s an ideal place to unwind after a morning on the bike.

Starting in Church Street in the heart the stunning 336-year-old town, riders make their way to the mountains to tackle jeep track, singletrack, steep climbs and pulsating descents – everything you’d want in a two-day stage race. Legendary mountain bike spots like Jonkershoek form part of the route, while access is also granted to farms that are usually off-limits to bikes.

The main benefactor of the Pennypinchers Origin of Trails is the Stellenbosch Trail Building Fund which is committed to further developing the trails in Stellenbosch and sealing the town’s reputation as a global mountain biking destination.

Stage 1 – 65km – 1650m vertical 17,5km single track

Stage 2 – 60km – 1580m vertical 20,9km single track

Stage 1 – 35km – 810 vertical 8,9km single track

Stage 2 – 30km – 890 vertical 8,6km single track

Boy time fly! Still looking to find my mojo and now time's up!

I didn't swallow hard on hearing about the climbing, for it's not possible to swallow and gag at once!

RIP Jonkershoek trails. Better go give it one last ride before OT.

Yet, its the one event that contributed liberally to the trail fund in the last few years. On one end the trail gets a beating, on the other end much needed funding is generated. Edited by GLuvsMtb

Cant help to wonder how much of the money gained must be spend on repairs because of damage the event did.... Thy keep using the newest trails which is not bed in properly yet and as result gets destroyed by the high volume of an event.
