How do I replace a gear cable on dual brake/gear change lever?

Can anyone advise please?

 

I'm struggling to replace the gear cable (for rear derailleur), but I cannot see how to thread the new cable in the handlebar grip.

 

It's a combination brake and gear lever. According to salesperson in bike shop, the rubber boot over the back of the handgrip should expose the feeder hole which seats the lug on the cable. My brake/gear lever has a hard plastic cover under the rubber book which the gear cable runs beneath. This plastic cover seems to be riveted in place under the handlebar tube, and there is a spring behind the rivet.  I can't think it is right that the rivet should be removed.

 

I've taken off the small top dust cover, and locating nut - that didn't release anything or reveal a hidden attachment point - and it's now not secure, the 8mm nut won't engage the threaded stud anymore - I assume that cover was cosmetic and not important.

 

All experienced advice much appreciated.

YES Please post some pics, normally you must just make sure the shifter selector is all the way to one end for it to find the hole.

I replaced my 9sp last week on XT duals.  Which model do you have because the older model (more common) is not the same.  Pretty simple.

You might be getting road lever advice for your mtb shifters.. Confusing.

 

Post a pic. and give details on make and model.

 

Road levers (generally) have a cover you peel back. MTB shifters have a little star screwdriver 'lug' that you take out for the gear lever.

It's a road bike, and shifter was in the high speed (low tension) position.

Seems to be Shimano 105 shifters (rest of groupset is this)

Follow one of them step by step.

you can see the hole the cable comes out in the first pic. Also you can see the old cable in this pic. just advance the gear until you can see the little ferrule on the end and then you can push it through.

You need to downshift (with the black lever) until you can see the little "pocket" that the cable swagged end goes into before you feed in the cable.  Remove the housing from the shifter so that you can see the hole where the cable exits the shifter.  If the old cable broke in the shifter the old end may still in the shifter and will jam things up.  Make sure that you get it out.  Be careful not to kink the new cable when feeding through the system and do not over tighten the cable clamp bolt on the RD.  Best to replace the housing when fitting a new cable as well.

Thanks for detail.  Could be difficult, I'm pulling back on the brake lever to expose the channel that the gear cable lies in - and no sign the feeder hole will rotate into the visible gap.
