Is aero really everything?

To chip in again...

 

GCN did a non-scientific test where a rider did 10min @400W and measured how far he went on an aero bike. Then did the same on a non-aero bike. IIRC it was a few 100m shorter on the non-aero bike.

 

 

 

I saw that, there were two big problems with the test.

 

First, the non-aero bike had the handlebars set up significantly higher so the person sat more upright.

 

second, the aero bike also had Zipp 303 wheels which  probably account for most of the benefit

I used clip on tri bars on an entry level road bike during the 70.3.  Changing my body position made a massive difference!  Even at slower speeds...

 

Won't mind an aero bike though, as they look cool

Thats probably the real reason they sell well.

 

I have no issue admitting I buy stuff where form trumps function.

Well my question is, do you really get advantage with a Aero bike in the peleton? Well if I could answer my own question I will say no. You will maybe be a few seconds faster in a breakaway, but most of the time it ends up in a sprint, and only the best man will win, not the best bike. So my vote goes to all the lightweight/comfort bikes.

A carbon track bike is a beautiful thing. No brakes, calipers, cables or cassettes. Perfectly aero. With super low narrow handlebars so you shoulders are low and your elbows in tight.
