Hi Hubbers!

Now that the chill is upon us in Gangsta's Paradise, some (like me) will retreat to their Winter Pain Caves (or local VA).

Just before LÉTape I followed one of Hunter Allen's 8 week Sportive training programs and it kept me occupied abd motivated. A few club members have told me about Training Peaks and TrainerRoad.

To those who use these (or any other paid service), what do you guys recommend?

Also, I only have an Andriod phone, not a tablet!

Trainer Road will work fine on your phone. It has loads of workouts and training plans, and your can create your own.

Training Peaks is for logging and analyzing your progress, something different.

What trainer do you have ? There are a few of the older smart trainers that do not work on the Trainer Road app. 1 being the Cycleops PowerBeam.

You can also use a PC for Trainer Road with the ANT+ usb stick. This combined with a few Sufferfest videos will keep you going.

I recently start using trainerroad, I like it. They give you a nice structured training program and it does motivate me to get on the IDT. I think you can get a demo. I got it for a month and after that I subscribed for a year.

Oh and it makes you suffer!!

I'm using it with my iphone and smart trainer.

I think it is more related to the type of trainer you use. If you have a bluetooth/ant power trainer like tacx or cycleops, I would recommend Zwift (works with android phone) if you want to get some realtime training in an environment that is not too boring. I have used EVERYTHING from trainerroad, virtual trainer from cycleops to zwift. They are all good but for different reasons. All have the option of structured workouts but only zwift has the ability to train with buddies on the other side of the world in a realtime virtual environment. You will find that you get bored with one of the mentioned apps after a month and then move on to another one the next month. All of them will cost you between 120-160 rands a month. Just be sure to put off the autorenewal. I had this feature on when i used trainer road and stopped using it for a few months not knowing I was still enrolled. They were very helpfull and actually refunded me for the months that I did not log on to the app. I can recommend tainerroad if you want very good structured training programs. It doesnt need a powert trainer. You can use it just with heart rate of persieved index. Real good program with lost of options. Trainer road, virtual trainer and zwift has a free trail. So try all of them before you commit.

Hope this helps. Good luck in the cave!

Use TrainerRoad if you are serious about getting faster. Android app works great.

Ive done 376 rides on TR since joining a couple years ago. Whats boring about getting faster?

Have to agree, it doesn't get boring. I've used it since 2015. Another thing is you not spending 3-4 hours on it, just a good solid 60-90 minute session of intervals.

Trying Golden Cheetah. How hard can it be?  :whistling:  :whistling:  :whistling:

I don't own an IDT, I use the Wattbike at my local VA.

Another subscription service?

Already got it. Limited workouts, but still challenging. Look for a program and not just aimless workouts.

No good for Vitality points

If you want a training plan use the free version of trainingpeaks and some of these training plans http://home.trainingpeaks.com/products/trainingplans/affiliates/british-cycling/british-cycling-training-plans

Record your workout on the wattbike with garmin then upload to trainingpeaks to monitor and also upload to Golden Cheetah if you are using

It seems pretty clear that those who have it, adore it.

From what I've read, it seems like you have to do a FTP test before you can continue with the app. What if I know my latest FTP figure is, must I still do the test?

Depends. Was your FTP test from your Power Meter? The same Power meter you plan to train with on TrainerRoad?

If "Yes" then in theory you wouldn't need to do a test when you start...just manually input your FTP and then in 4 weeks you'll test again anyway.

Sounds like somebody is trying to avoid doing an FTP?

It's free, if you ignore the pain and water loss
