Roval CLX 50 carbon clinchers

I used to have the CLX40 Rovals. Loved them to bits. Perfect for the South Eastern days... What I did find with them is they dont spin up as quickly as my Mavics, but thats not a problem really. Just if you wanna compare you might feel the difference. Lighter then some well know aero brands as well... The CLX50 replace the clx40 wheels. With 25mm tyres on, if I hit a reflector on the road, I dont even worry it might deflate.

I have pre firecrest zipp hoops, they roll smooth and keeps spinning for days.

I dont see the point in replacing them as they've serve me well.(although they are tubular)

Thanks!

Look 586 ISP team edition - a little old compared to some of the new snazzy bikes out there. but for the life of me i cannot let go of this bike. love it to bits!

Congratz

Pics please to confirm the purchase

Pics will be posted!

That's an expensive panic.... Enjoy!!

Funny, i bought them locally and the shop matched the price on Sigma Sport.

That is: Price + shipping costs + import duties.

ended up being around R7k discount from local prices.

Sigma Sport is brilliant as it calculates shipping and all import costs for you. also gives you the option to pay this all up front so you do not need to do anything else! all in ZAR nogal!

I hope you strapped them in!!

thanks! lets hope the freebody arrives soon!

as it stands i have taken them out of the wheel bags and looked at them multiple times the last few days!

a review of sorts will be posted  :w00t:

Some feedback!

got the Campag freebody and have fitted it to the bike.

did the full swap over and really chuffed with the outcome!

here my bike is with the my old CLX 60's.

loved these wheels, stiff and really fast. maybe a little deep and slightly heavy hence the move to the CLX 50's.

still looks mean though!

i had the Campagnolo Shamal Ultra's on the bike in the interim - these are the older version that are slightly narrower than the new version. Still bullet proof wheels!

Finally in swapping over i took a couple of interest pics.

Front wheel weight = 641 grams

all warning stickers removed. Roval rim tape installed.

Rear wheel weight = 784 grams (SHIMANO) and 781 grams (CAMPAG)

all warning stickers removed. Roval rim tape installed.

a 3 gram saving in running Campag

post-19822-0-77696000-1497190454_thumb.jpg

TOTAL WEIGHT 1422 Grams.

not to far off the claimed 1375 Grams - 47 grams and 50 grams more if i ran shimano.

However this could possibly come down a further +-30 grams or so in using the supplied spoke hole plugs in favour of the fitted rim tape.

I chose to use the rim tape because is was factory installed and done so nicely that i didn't want to rip it off the wheels. that and to faf over 30 grams when i have a few extra Kg's to loose seemed a little silly.

All in all i would have liked to see the weight being a little closer to the claimed mark, but in reality i'm not phased by it.

estimated weight using the plugs would be 1392 grams.

estimated weight without plugs installed would be 1382 grams.

bikeradar measure their set at 1416 Grams with rim tape and a shimano freehub.

Next thing is the shear width of these wheels.

my 2015 campagnolo shamal ultra's can just about fit between the inner rim of the Roval CLX 50's

What was more surprising was how the 25mm GP4000II sat so differently on each of the rims.

this picture shows the Roval CLX 50's vs the 2015 Shamal Ultra's. both fitted with exactly the same type of tire. a 25mm GP4000II.

Finally here is the end result!

I hope to write some sort of review in the near future.

I will be able to compare the wheels against:

Roval CLX 60's

2015 Campag Shamal Ultra's

2008 Bora tubbies

2012ish? AX- Lightness Tubbies - 900 odd grams a set!

2013 50mm Darkhorse Wheels

2005ish? Mavic SSC SL wheels

i have not done a ride on these yet except up and down my complex road.

initially i can say they must be stiff. a couple of hard stomps on the pedals at low speed and the wheels stayed solid. no brake rub was heard - and i run my brake pads very close! so chuffed.

The DT swiss 240 hub is also nice and quiet.

MORE TO COME!

Dont believe everything you read on the interwebs but actually try and test various wheels if possible.

I was in the lucky situation recently of testing the Roval CLX40 wheels fitted on a S works Tarmac test bike. The wheels was actually the disappointing part of my 2 week test.

The wheels felt dead and no feedback but they rolled decent when at high speeds. Overpriced though to be honest with better wheels at the same price point.

I went for the 2017 Bora One 50 clinchers instead but the Zipp 404s was a very close 2nd choice.

The CLX 40's are a much older design than the 32's, 50,s and 64's. The last 3 had been completely redesigned. They are wider and now also tubeless ready. I agree the 40's were not the greatest. I am rolling a set of 64's and they are great. My next buy is a set of 32's.

Just a pity Spez SA don't have the tubeless tires.
