Will a XT alternative Pedal Sell?

Hi Everyone

I have a question.

Would a pedal that is pretty much identical to a Shimano XT pedal sell?

The info: 10 grams heavier, sealed bearings over the loose ball bearings in xt's.

They will retail around R500 cheaper then the Shimano XT pedals.

The pedals will come with a 6 month warranty.

What does everyone think?

Are they XT? I think it's kind of like saying: "Would a DA alternative sell? It's 100g heavier, looks a bit different, uses a square taper BB, oh, and it's called Microshift..."

Hmmm

Looks 99% the same, it is not a XT pedal. But 90% of people will not notice the differences.

They will olso not be branded XT.

There are so many "shimano" type pedals available in the R500-R1000 bracket already. IMO there will be a lot of competition in a market already full of bulletproof type pedals where guys aren't buying for bling!

Of course, I base this on the limited info you have provided. No pics or test reviews done etc.

Give the guys at the hub (or me) a set to bash around for 3 months. The review will be honest and the practicality and relevance will sit better on this forum.

XT is the go to pedal due to years of experience... without that it's all heresay

XT pedals, or pedals in general, isn't something people(well I at least) buy for bragging or showing off. XT pedals have been the benchmark pedal against which all others are judged because it has reputation. A reputation of being well made, bombproof, user serviceble, used by Pro's and just lasting. And lasting. And lasting.

Give me those things and yea, I might consider.

Here is 1 example

http://www.rydercycling.co.za/ryder-products/pedals-1/si-bi-pedal-ii-detail

Ryder has a decent distribution network throughout SA, but despite favorable pricing and similarities to Shimano pedals, they are not popular sellers.

Pedals are also not sold frequently. People usually buy a pair when they get a new bike (or they even just reuse their old ones) and if they are XT pedals, you service them about once a year (very simple to do). My current set has been on my bike for almost 4 years and shows a bit of wear, but are still in perfect working condition.

I tried Ritchey SPD type pedals, as they were cheaper than Shimano. They were K@k and never lasted. One literally screwed off the shaft. I then bought the M540's which I should have in the first place. Good luck.

I have these and they're absolutely excellent. Paid 400 bucks, and they're light, work great, and I couldn't be happier

R500 less than who, local bike shop or online retailers. If less than online, online SA or online worldwide

Example, Evobikes prices: XT R1,400 & M540 R995. But then I can land XT pedals from CRC at R1,100 excl shipping

So based on your indication, it will be very difficult at only R500 cheaper than LBS. I would suggest that on brand power alone you should beat the M540 price by R300-R500 and be very agressive in trying to inform me about the quality.

The bikehub investigators are working this thread :D

Some things are hard beat, looks like Xt etc etc but that's meaningless if it falls apart after a year. And in this instance sealed bearings isn't much of an advantage, I've come to appreciate the loose ball shimano system, easy to service and low cost spares. Sealed bearings are often a biatch to remove and refit and can get relatively pricey to replace.

Even Shimano offers less expensive versions.

Imho, you'll just be offering something that is already out there in abundance.

Hint, if you want to offer the bike market something it needs;

Reliable dropper posts

800 g tyres that won't puncture.

Mudguards that don't need to be fixed to your bike with cable ties.

The perfect gearbox for a bicycle.
