so i decided to spoil myself in the next few months with a new mtb bike. my first new bike ever after riding for more than 12 years...

so with all the specials going on at the moment, and after eliminating a lot of potential bikes, i think i narrowed it down to two bikes:

cannondale scalpel si 5 2017 model

http://cyclelab.com/cannondale-scalpel-si-5-29-mountain-bike-2017/

OR

scott spark 950 2018 model.

http://cyclelab.com/scott-spark-950-29-mountain-bike-2018/

both go for R39 999 at cyclelab.

I can;t decide though.

the type of riding i wanna do: trans baviaans meets berg n bush meets wolwespruit meets spruit.

which one would you guys pick and why?

Bikes i've cancelled out due to price, reviews etc:

Momsen vipa trail 1

spesialised camber comp

trek fuel ex5

pyga oneten29

pyga stage

yt jeffsey

can't decide. help

Scalpel is more of an out-and-out XC race bike whereas the Spark is a bit more trail oriented (slacker head angle etc.) so it depends what you are looking for.

Personally, I have the 2017 Spark and I love it

See if you can maybe try them both out.

My two riding buddies have moved over to Scalpels and swear on pain of death they can never ride anything else !!

Do you require half a fork or a full fork?

Personally I would go for the Spark, it gives a bit more versatility whereas the Scalpel is more of a race bike.

The link takes me to an old / empty page. But from the URL are you suggesting a 2017 spark 940?

That's strange but yeah the 2017 Spark 940. They have it on special for R36 999

Duane, I don’t want to be ‘that guy’ to propose another option, but consider the 2018 Giant Anthem as well. I did a test ride on it a few months ago and it impressed me.

Note: I picked up a Trek Top Fuel 9.8 for a steal, so didn’t go for the Anthem, but if R40k was my budget, I would have been mighty tempted.

:stupid: ....what he said...the Anthems are great bikes, just test ride the bikes you have narrowed down, that is crucial imo when buying new.

This will be such a subjective thread, HOWEVER I have just got myself a Trigon 29er from redhub Cycles.R33k

Full carbon dual susp. Sram GX 1 x 12 and weighs in at around 10,8kg.

Bang for buck and carbon you will battle to do better.
