slewk Posted February 27, 2018 Share So i mostly ride enduro on flats and i can comfortably ride for 4 hours with decent elevation and no pain (im 32 by the way) I recently decided to do the argus on a road bike and have been doing a few training rides, yesterday being my first 50k, and im getting a sharp pain in my right hip an hour or so into the ride Is there anything that would cause this on a road bike, or with the cleats? Or is this just the repetitive motion that im not used to, as apposed to the start / stop of enduro riding? I know this issue can be caused by a plethora of things, but was wondering if there is something simple that ive overlooked and could adjust Luke FrikkieMeyer87
Captain Fastbastard Mayhem Posted February 27, 2018 Share Most likely your saddle position relative to your innersoles (yes, that pedantic - pedal thicknesses, sole thicknesses and cleat thicknesses differ between makes & models) but as you say it could be a long list of things. Grease_Monkey Posted February 27, 2018 Share Well my cleat on my shoes I use on the indoor trainer was squee by a few mm, making my heel point outwards more than it should. Being lazy I thought I would fix it after the session, and went on to train for an hour. The next day my knee was stuffed, could hardly walk. So yeah, very good chance the cleats position is the culprit in your case, but could be saddle position and height too - a high saddle aswell as one that is tilted too far back can result in hip pain. Go for a setup... it's costly, but well worth it, especially on a road bike where you sit in the same position for hours on end. A problem like this is nearly impossible to solve on an internet forum - as you mentioned it could be a looong list of things. Agree with Myles. It's a change of bike, so the fit will probably be different, in some way (isn't the Q-factor of a MTB crankset bigger than a road one?) so your body will either need time to adjust, or will want the fit between the 2 bikes adjusted? (I put a MTB crankset on a CX frame and had knee issues. Swapped it our for a road crank....problem solved. PS I'm a roadie).
Karman de Lange Posted February 27, 2018 Share Guess high saddle, rocking around to much trying to reach the pedals. But really difficult to say. Maybe try take photo of you on bike. Go for bike fit, you should not have any discomfort, maybe after 5 hrs, but def not before 1 hr. Duane_Bosch Posted February 27, 2018 Share Thanks guys Where does one go for a bike fit and how much does it usually cost? You shouldn't have pain an hour into a ride. Where do you live? Neville Cragg at bikemob did a bikefit for me. I think I paid R450. Best money I've spent in my cycling life. He didn't use a protractor or camera or anything funny. Just asked some questions and watched me pedal on the trainer. Had hectic knee pain and after the fit it's gone. Common problem on roadies is people have their saddles too high causing a rocking motion in your hips. That might well be the source of your pain. But a bike fit will sort that out. I took my saddle height from my roadie and copied that over to my enduro bike after my bike fit. usxorf Posted February 27, 2018 Share For hip pain check for symmetry when pedaling, the side with pain might be tracking a bit towards the outside of straight ahead. Your thighs/knees should be straight ahead. slewk

slewk Posted February 27, 2018 Share Anyone know of cheap options in the CBD area? Quite strapped for time work wise and normally cycle to work. Revolution does it but it's a bit pricey
Duane_Bosch Posted February 27, 2018 Share I think Giant will do it for R600ish. I'd get it done this week so you can get some kms into your legs on the new setup. Also. It's the week before argus. So you need to get a wriggle on. Btw. Welcome to the dark side. Road is awesome. If I had a rand for every gravity guy I've seen putting in kms on the black stuff id be on a dogma.
