What to buy: Scott vs Giant MTB

Hi Gents,

I am about to take the plunge into a new MTB to replace my aging Silverback Saturn :).

I have narrowed my options to 2 bikes, both offered by my LBS.

Scott Spark RC 900 Team (2018): https://www.scott-sports.com/za/en/product/scott-spark-rc-900-team-bike

VS.

Giant Anthem Adv Pro 1 (2018): https://www.giant-bicycles.com/za/anthem-advanced-pro--29er--1-2018

Which is the better bike? does anyone have any experience on these?

Thanks in advance

Go and ride them and buy which you enjoy the most. Both are from major brands, so back-up is there.

In the end, no matter what biased recommendations you get here on the Hub, you’ll have to live with your purchase.

Faced with these, I’ll buy the Scott. Cannot really justify my reason, I am just biased like that.

100% with Traveler. If you can test ride a bike over a weekend rather than a mini parking lot run you'll be in the best position to make a decision.

Opinion wise - the Scott. Have a 2013 entry level 650 Spark. The most important part of the bike has been problem free...that's the frame. Far off from the RC though.

Agreed, ride both.

May I suggest you also test ride a TREK.  Totally different geometry ... much less agressive feel to the handling..... not a right or wrong thing, just different strokes for different folks ...

Just an obsefvation - how many secondhand Scotts do you see on the hub as opposed to Giants

At a rough count of mountain bikes, pretty much the same amount

Also think about warranty - Scott 5 years vs Giant lifetime.

It's significantly easier claiming from Giant as well.

Very true and if you have a good LBS that stock Giant its even easier.

I am not just being biased BUT when a very highly regarded Epic mechanic tells you how many Scott Sparks they got to mend all the time with seized pivots and cracked rear frame pieces VS the almost zero issues with Giant bikes... it kind of influences your decision.

Also the bobtastic suspension on Scott when you forget to lockout the suspension for the millionth time is not my favourite either.

And all bikes make funny noises when they not cleaned and maintained well even giant and scott and spez etc etc.

Wish I could get my hands on that Giant Anthem - tested one for a couple of days in Advanced Pro 0 setup and now I cannot stop dreaming about it...

I have a 2015 Giant Anthem Adv 29er. Almost 18000km on it, and havent had one issue yet.

Lifetime warranty and support of Giant is fantastic! Discovered a small hairline crack on the frame 3 years ago (I ride my Anthem HARD)... Giant had no questions, no issues, 4 days later I had a brand spanking new frame, built up and done (Kudos to my LBS too!)

Both bikes are fantastic.

If I had the $$$ (65k odd) to buy a MTB again... Guess what I will buy...

An Anthem. Must say though, I still have the XT groupset on mine, not too sure about the reliability of the SRAM Eagle, I am a big fan of the Shimano grouppo.

So, if I can choose that frame again, and somehow get it in a Shimano groupset again, I will rather do that.

My 2c.

Hi Ysterperd,

Not sure actually.

An educated guess would be that there are more Giants second hand?

Hi ChrisF,

Which Trek would you suggest?

Thanks!
