Gear shifter - kids bike

Replace cables. Use proper lined outers. Problem solved, and will cost about one gorilla with no hunting about for random spares.

If this doesn't work, Sunrace do 6sp triggers.

It is still a new bike, okay a few months old.

Do I replace just the outer cable ?  Or both inner and outer ?

Inner and outer. The cables supplied on kids bikes are utter rubbish about 90% of the time, so if the gear cable does the trick then get the brakes done at the same time. Probably the best upgrade you can do to a kids bike.

following the suggestions with interest as my daughters bike is the same.

I'll start with trying to lube the cables, if that does not work then I'll progress to changing them.

NOTHING works.

Trust me on this.

An 8 year old girl cannot shift anything new on the bike shop floor.

Went triggers and she was in heaven.

Trick is to find a brand that has a trigger option. (which also have the correct colour)

Even with lined cables? I've done a few replacements on bikes and they worked fine. That said, it's been a long time since I was a 6 year old girl.

But you do get some terrible twist shifters. My approach with these things is to start with the cheap and easy things and work your way back from there.

Played a bit in the garage ....

When I push the derailure by hand the twist grip moves freely.

When I pull the cable under the down-tube the derailure climbs the gears easy enough.

BUT, shift gears with the twist grip and it is NOT easy .....

May just experiment with new inner and outer cables ..... before spending money on trigger shifters

at least the brakes are working perfectly fine.

I gave up trying to find the right colours for my kids and just took them to the auto paint shop and let them.choose their own colours and spent a couple of weekends painting frames... at least they have never said their bikes are the wrong colour...

Would you recommend that regardless of brand ?

my boy struggled with the grip shifter also when he first got his bike at 4years old, what made difference and helped him alot was wearing gloves, he seems to get a better grip. took him about two months of stopping and using two hands or me to shift for him but then got use to it and built enough strength.

Powerbar has a small 500ml bottle that you can find at most Dischems.  ;)

Hi there Huber’s

On my girls bikes , I replaced the crappy grip shifters to the sram xo

grip shifters. This made a world of a difference for them.

I've replaced the twist grip with the trigger in the photo.

I found this at Solomons (Pta) a few years ago.

It worked very well.
