For me, the new route was harder, but statistically speaking, it's very similar.

                            2016 2017 2018
                   Mean: 04:16:59 04:24:45 04:16:19
Mode (grouping of 5min): 03:50:00 03:40:00 03:50:00
               Variance: 00:03:22 00:03:45 00:02:46

Nice!

The mode makes my time feel less special.... :P

It seems participation has been on the decline over this period, do you think that would skew 2018 to the left?  Also, what's the effect of the "Heat Plan"?  Did those late finishers receive Racetec finish times despite riding a significantly shorter route? (might explain the tighter variance)

thats a good point, how have they adjusted figures for those that did the shorter route ?

Just had a look at the Strava accounts for a few of the backmarkers.  They did around 83km or 87km (depending on phase 1 or 2 of the heat plan I suppose) on the shortened routes but still received finishing times on the Racetec results page.  That really messes with the data.

Guys im just curious, what times did you okes post on your MTB with knobbies for the 947?

3:46 (dual suss) but I am no racing snake so guessing there are some pretty impressive knobbly times out there - this was last years race though.

Climbing isn't "harder" in the Argus.

Main thing that affects finish times is the extra distance: 108ish on Garmin (for practically everyone I know on Strava/rode with) vs 93ish on Garmin for yesterday's exploits (same "methodology")

Only three big climbs, sure, but two are in the second half. Top of Suikerbossie is just shy of yesterday's finish distance, with still another 15km to go. Still ±20 minutes riding, even if you're pinning it.

Sure. I reckon can make that ride pretty tough too though?

mixed bags when i try to compare.  I enjoyed the fast riding on the M1, but its a way different race.  stats are much different and its hard to say if it was harder or easier...

2017: 2h53;  average power: 218W / 274NP;  avg HR 155; Max 20min: 265W

2018: 2h52;  average power: 197W / 248NP;  avg HR 155; Max 20min: 254W

both starts were from C, so the stats suggest a much easier ride in 2018.  That said, at some point around hyde park / zoo lake i had a look and my average power was north of 230W and NP was 285ish, so the first half was crazy hard and once you hit the M1 the numbers drop big time coasting in the bunch for 30 odd minutes.

i thought i was fitter this year, yet i almost started cramping after kyalami yesterday and my numbers are way lower.  how did you guys compare if you look at the effort?

I have done a 3:15 on my hardtail a few years ago with Knobblies

Saw a guy on Sunday on his Cannondale Scalpel and he finished in under 3

I thought the new route was harder, given the conditions we rode in.

2017 vs 2018

VD vs VC

Both years I went into the CC without specifically training for it - just going on my fitness level at the time. Only difference was that I had just over 900Km worth of running since last year’s CC.

Same bike, same gear, same weight, same result.

3:11 from batch E

Got a really great pull from a CycleLab group from the old Lion park till Homestead, and then stuck with a large group for large part of the M1 through till Kyalami which helped make that time a reality.

Well not many complaints about goodie bags, but quite a few about E Bikes. Really? Some take the fun ride world Champs so seriously. Just get on with it man. Do you think people care whether you came 7429th or 7430th??.

Do I know? Yes. Do I care? Not really. FTP was set about 5 weeks before the CC, so I guess the training helps.

interesting... our power numbers are basically reversed.  I expected to see a similar decline in avg power and NP due to the M1 factor...

From the top of the M1 after the last bump to the Jukskei river, Ave. power = 113W, NP = 181W (which includes the bump after Grayston). I was digging deep on every climb, until the M1, refusing to give up my position at the back of the small bunch, so that I could enjoy the M1 in a group (out the wind). Paid for it once we turned into Kyalami, as it was a solo ride until Summit Rd.
