Craai Posted October 11, 2018 Share So, was busy swapping wheels between my tri bike and road bike for the Satellite Classic this weekend (tri bike 10 speed, road bike 11 speed, so swapping cassettes as well). Take off the 10 speed cassette, no worries, slides off the freebody without any hassle. Loosen the 11 speed cassette lockring and cassette doesn’t slide off. Mmmmm, weird, have a bit of a closer look and I notice the cassette has “eaten” into the freebody quite significantly. Is this common? Cassette (Shimano Ultegra 11 spd) and freebody still the original that came with bike (bought new, Scott foil), about 2 years old, done about 4000km. I don’t really shift under strain, so can’t imagine why there would be this much wear. Lastly, should I replace?
BaGearA Posted October 11, 2018 Share Normal wear
bikebloke Posted October 11, 2018 Share its a shimano thing - shallow grooves on freehub body and the cogs + steel cogs contacting a (usually)aluminium (to save weight ) freehub body and what you see there is the result. doesnt happen with campy much because the grooves are much deeper .. s14phoenix Posted October 11, 2018 Share I would just smooth the freehub where the cassette dug into the freehub so the cassette slides back on and put the cassette back on. Totally normal on ally freehub with no inserts for wear. But also those hubs need a good clean... Long Wheel Base
Eldron Posted October 12, 2018 Share Yup. Normal alu freehub wear. Smooth it off with a file and pop the cassette back on. Craai

Just shows you the pure, unadulterated power and strain that a triathlete puts on a freehub!!!!! Craai

lechatnoir Posted October 12, 2018 Share reduce your power man!! you're destroying your components! seriously, seems normal, but never seen it like that on my bikes though
cadenceblur Posted October 12, 2018 Share happens on the Hope body as well, some people opt for the steel version for this very reason.
