Not Amashova winds but 15 to 20km/h crosswinds on the highway coming back from Pelindaba is gonna be a hard day out for everyone involved.

 

Better get you crew together for those rolling echelons if you want to have any chance of surviving such a day.

Sorry, sounds over dramatic that final sentence.

 

But moves are probably going to be made to drop the lightweight climbers in that wind before they reach Tom Jenkins.

I'll be at the finish line, assisting my son that's doing the photo finish for the race commissaires. If you're a hubber, shout out a hello to me and my son when you pass the finish line...…. :clap:

Next year

please make sure that someone leads out the cats that know the rout

Leadrs on both 20 and 60 had to turn around at least once

Our race was over before it even started. Some guy that was late for the start tried to make up all the spots he lost in KL before going over the timing mats. He hit a barrier and crashed against my girlfriend who then took me down. Her rear disc was so badly bent we had to pull out. Would have loved to try out the route, will just have to give it another shot next year.

What a brilliant race. The last climb separated the men form the boys. I was a boy. Loved the vibe and the route was great. The cops did thier best to control the lawless taxis (one jump in the rider lain and there nearly bikes on the ground)The race was exilerating. Weather was perfect baring a little head wind. Hope full next year better water points and better website. Sponsor put a lot of money into this race not all is channeled to the race.... but we try! Summary I have a great day and my bike bud was very strong.

(However I did think that the cyclists who fell in behind the Duracell bunny was not playing cricket though?)

Congrats on a well run event and two thumbs up for the new route, much more scenic than the highway out and back. Had a bit of a stop/start race; narrowly avoided the crash in DL 5km into the race and missed the bunch. Went out a bit hard trying to catch up and burned too many matches.(that’s my story and sticking to it) Managed to hang on to a new group on the highway, but punctured at 70km. Refused to walk up TJ (people, please stay left when walking so others can pass)

 

All in all a lekker day out (although course was 8km short of advertised 98km, maybe something to look at)

 

PS- I see the medals were put on a serious diet from last year

TOTAL ROAD CLOSURE - Nonsense, lots of cars on route

 

95 (90 actually so timing/pacing your finish properly was not happening today) ,60 AND 20 KM ROAD RACE

Still an enjoyable route, the bumps just before Hartebeespoort were challenging, and The Jenkins climb... well..., glad I got some practice for this nasty bump riding up Spionkop at the Berg n Bush.

Definitely worth doing again, the wind reminded one of riding the N14 into "the teeth" in previous 947 races.

Nice to ride through town too, and past the union buildings.

The finish was rather diabolical, no directions, and trying to find your way back to the start between buses and cars going up and over the hill (yes more climbing) was a little irritating

All in all I had a lekker day, but I think the organizers could definitely do with some constructive criticism from the riders to improve the event. There were way too many seemingly simple things that I think were overlooked. It seems the organizers checked this thread at some point, so maybe things can change for next year if we make some suggestions of what we think could be better. Really enjoyed the race though, so I'll be back next year even if nothing changes :D

 

My 2c on what could be done better in future:

  • Instructions as to which roads would be closed and which to use to access the venue would have been great. It seemed like loads of people (including me) went to fountains, and then didn't know where to go from there due to the road being blocked. Literally an A5 piece of paper in the "race pack" would suffice.
  • An indication as to where the water points are going to be. Maybe I missed it, but I had no clue how many water points there were, or where they were situated. Again, A5 sheet in the race pack with a route map and water point locations would be perfect. 
  • Signage at the venue. I had no clue where the start was from where I eventually parked. 
  • A demarcated walkers lane on Tom Jenkins. I almost couldn't ride up due to the amount of people walking all over the road. People are moeg. They need help with common sense like keeping to one side of the road if they're walking. 
  • Dustbins at the venue. I didn't see any, and when I left I saw that people had randomly made piles of empty bottles on the side of the road so I'm guessing I'm not the only person that couldn't find a place to chuck stuff away.  
  • An indication of which roads aren't fully closed. I wasn't expecting to see any cars on the route, but quite a few came past me on the section on the R511. I think it's pretty dangerous to tell people there's full road closure when there's not. 
  • Maybe a route change to avoid some of the chaos of the CBD? The traffic cops did their best, but I reckon they had their work cut out for them trying to control all of the taxis and cars and pedestrians on the road. Even with all of their efforts, I still saw a few cars that managed to get onto the closed off roads and had to be chased down by motor bikes and escorted off the road.
