Tell me more about Crankbrothers pedals

Trying to be objective - I've had Candy's (various, around 4 or 5 pairs) for maybe 10 years. Some I've been able to service until the kits stopped; I've had a broken spring replaced when Bicicletta? were still the agents. They have never let me down through plenty Sani's, B&B etc etc but they do start to squeak and loosen after about a year to 18 months then you must do something (I do) otherwise I guess they will fail.

BUT during the same period my riding partners had SPD's and maybe greased them once or twice, just out of being prepared - they weren't squeaking or loose.

I'm considering the darkness of SPD's at the moment.

If maintenance is the only reason to choose SPD over CB, then choosing a balance bike or a scooter over a bike with a drivetrain makes total sense.

Then running is much better than cycling, cause I've never had to grease my Brooks.

This happened to me twice with two different pairs...

I obviously don't ride CB anymore.

When it comes to smooth clip-ins and clip outs, float, contact area and mud clearing CrankBrothers and Look are far superior, but nothing rivals Shimano for durability. I have a pair of Shimanos on my road bike, that I only use on the indoor trainer, that I've had for yonks. They're not as comfortable as my other pedals but I know they won't break.

I rode the Look S-tracks after that and recently decided to try the SPD compatible Look X-tracks. Same design as the Shimano but with 1 degree more float (admittedly still 2 degrees less than CBs), a bigger contact area and better mud clearing. To me, that pedal is a winner!

I have used both recently.

Had a set of Shimano XT for a few years but thought I would upgrade to a set of Crank Bros Ti Candy. I used to race on the Eggbeater 4Ti so thought I would give them another shot, thinking they would have made the product better quality over the years.

Worst decision ever!

Crank Bros feedback:

  • Have a spongy feeling when clipping in
  • They have a higher profile so it feels like the saddle needs to go up a few mm's
  • Clipped a few rocks because of the higher profile
  • They squeak on the cleats
  • Bearings seize very quickly
  • More pressure on the cleatpatch on the shoe
  • They do shed mud very well but is it worth all the above hassle?

After 3 months, I went back to my old XT's and sold the Candy's.

reckon you can't just stick with your opinions on legacy CB products

I remember that "Ask us anything" interview when it was happening in real time...it was so brutal. Very brave of Crank Brothers.

Maybe they've gotten their act together, but it would take years of other people trying their products (before me) for me to take them seriously. Pedals, bars, wheels...these are things you have you full bodyweight on going down a hill at 50kph and its not OK for them to be unreliable.

This is a *** argument.

SPD and CB goes the same speed and does the same thing.  No one pedal (performance wise) will give an advantage over another.  Your bike vs scooter is different.

Both pedals will give the same output.  Speed. Performance....making the bike go forward with human power.  Speed and functionality is the same for any pedal.

Maintenance and reliability is the main differentiation when it comes to pedals.

This one will give you more **** than the other.  Period

I hate Shimano.  With a passion.

But

Their SPDs are better than anything I have used over the past 20 years.  Maintenance.  Value for money.  Rand per kilometer

It is what it is.

only if you are a fair weather rider.

In wet conditions ou may as well just have the axle because the rest of the Shimano pedal is useless except for bashing your shins in

why you un clipping all the time to get mud in the cleats/pedal body :P

If I switch to CB then I can't take my friend's bike for a spin :(

I've also hear that the CB cleats wear out quicker?

The pedals are designed to allow the cleat to slide between the retaining bars. For this to work smoothly the cleats have to be brass and therefore softer than steel so yes they will wear out.

Spd cleats are designed to be fixed in place so steel is fine. Because they don’t move they don’t wear out. Walking will wear any cleat
