Abductor Pollicis Longus (upper forearm at wrist) pain

Recommended Posts

Hello fellow hubbers.

I'm wondering if anyone has had injuries pertaining to the abductor pollicis Longus muscle and can remember things like the cause, injury extent and recovery? I'm reading interweb results in the meantime, but would appreciate real world insight as well.

What happened: rode an extremely rocky trail, hurt left arm muscle somehow when I thumb-shifted while fork took a hit, recovered over a few months, hurt right arm muscle somehow and now seeking to speed up the recovery of this injury. Both times I didn't experience pain until a few hours after the ride, so there must be inflammation present - oh and forgot to add there is visible swelling. It hurts when I use my right arm for anything more intensive than typing and I'm getting flashbacks of how sad it was seeing my mtb stand for so long :(

edit: I did search the forums first, but only found knee related results
edit 2: adding more info that I remembered.

No idea if this will help.

back in school i was involved in a big rugby tackle. my entire arm went limp for a few minutes.

when i got feeling back i had a fiery pain in the middle my forearm about 2 inches above my wrist.

same thing as you, i could barely use my arm as i got random localised stabbing pains.

i spent months going to physio's and specialists and told a heap of different reasons why it hurt.

i used transact pads and creams, hot pads, ice. i tried everything

i got told i had torn/ripped muscle sheaths etc etc etc

I (and the specialists) were all assuming the issue was where the pain presented.

in the end it was a chiropractor who diagnosed me correctly with a pinched nerve in my neck that was causing the pain in my forearm.

2 visits with him and i was pain free.

i hope you find a solution

Not sure of your case or the relevance, but I see a lot of MTB riders riding with their wrists bent downward. That is asking to get hurt. You need to keep your wrist straight so that any impact from the fork does not place stress on the joint.

  • 3 weeks later...

My 2c worth - have a badly broken shoulder from many years ago. When the shoulder muscles are tired, I tend to hunch my shoulders and the front of the shoulder pinches the nerve just under the collar bone at the front. This refers pain to the outside of my forearm just below the wrist. Hurts like an absolute bastard, especially at night or when trying to rotate the wrist under any load, but almost no shoulder pain. Been to many, many physios, biokineticists etc before I found a chiro who got the diagnosis right. Long and the short of it is shoulder exercises to strengthen the back of the shoulder(T, Y and L pullups with a strap). I’m told that us bikers tend to have weak shoulder muscles and this causes the problem. More so if you are death gripping the handlebars and tend to lean forward. If you google T,Y, L exercises, you will find many references. I also do the “window washer” and stretch out the pectoral against a wall. Haven’t had forearm issues in almost a year - was at the point of not riding before that. PM me if you need more explanation on exercises, I can email some explanations to you.
