The toolbox thread

I was thinking of putting this on the 'things I've learnt..' thread, but maybe our awesome-most tools deserve their own thread.

So-

  1. Tools you'd buy again?
  2. Stuff that looks OK, but otherwise a complete waste of good cash
  3. Stuff you want, can't find, or can't get at the right price

I'm having some trouble uploading pictures (which was kinda the point) - my list of truly cycling specific tools is this

1. chain pliers

2. a proper cable cutter

3. deraileur alignment guage (especially if you're mountainbiking)

4. brake shoe tuner - for rim brakes. a surprisingly good idea

5. Bleed kit

Only cycling related?

My work toolbox is snap-on from top to bottom. My toolbox at home is snap-on from top to bottom. I have some parktool stuff where the snap-on tools aren't specific enough.

Well obviously you have a bottomless wallet, some of their prices are just off the charts but drool worthy.

stuff I want to find still

a truly universal bearing puller/press. especially one that won't break the bank (those tuning fork things that you're meant to use to knock bearings out are truly hateful)

a facing tool that does more than one thing (e.g. BB + headset). I'd probably also want to be able to grind the extra mm off an 11s cluster too.

1. Xtools toolbox https://road.cc/content/review/147435-x-tools-bike-tool-kit

2. Bearing puller

3. Home made bearing press (threaded rod, washers and wood blocks)

4. Cable cutters

5. Torx set

6, Quick link chain pliers

7. Rubber mallet

8..Grease and copper paste.

9. Torque wrench

Have stripped and rebuilt many bikes, some new builds both road and MTB with the above and have only been to a LBS once where the BB was glued in, so needed help removing.

Wheels rebuild I will leave the the LBS, truing will do myself.

I’ll have to clean up my workshop before posting pictures.

Now that I have a torque wrench what I’ve found I need is a set of Allen key sockets that have some reach on them, the standard ones in my socket set are a little bulky and short to get into some places on the bike.

Te more unusual things I would get again, spanners with the pivot end whatever they're called from 8-14mm (I see fanievb already has the set!), a reamer tool for enlarging holes or taking the burr off. a spatula thingy I got off a vet that I end up using for almost everything gooey and a subtle hammer for when persuasion without too much regret is required.
