Gout

Been on a high-protein, low carb diet for months now in an effort to lower blood sugar. Been largely successful and I've lost 13kgs with very little exercise. However as a result of all the proteins, I've developed chronic gout. Not only have I not been able to ride for many weeks, but it's really affected my every day life. I've taken the regular medication indicated for this ailment but with very limited success. I've also cut back on the protein intake. Would appreciate any advice on this issue wrt alternative medication/ remedies.... please... desperate. TIA

2016 I was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes.  Took a good few months to get under control, in fact for the first three months things went the wrong way and my meds were upgraded a few times ....

I had a many sessions with the dietitian.

Incredible confusing and conflicting information out there on this topic !!

Eventually we made the call that I would co-operate 100% with the dietitian's advise, and ignore all other input ... note that the dietitian had access to my full medical history and tailormade a plan for me .... which basically means it looks very much like the traditional hart/diabetic eating plan, with slight tweaks for me.

A few months later I noted that we had gone without carbs for a few meals .... NOT to cut the carbs, simply because we were enjoying the fresh veggie options ....  I spoke to the dietitian and got a proper scolding !!    The KEY is a "balanced diet".  SURE, the balance is different for different people, health, age, levels of activity, etc etc all playing into the ideal "balance" ....

PS - my diabetes is now fully under control, and I am on the lightest meds ...

Very long winded way to say that MY personal experience is to AVOID "popular advise" and to go see a specialist.

GOUT!!!!!

I've suffered from it for years, once rode the Argus with a swollen and tender foot! I'm on a daily dose of Puricos to keep my Uric acid under control. Toes, wrists, ankles, thumbs, kidney stones, I suppose I just have 'bad' genes!

I carry the EMERGENCY kit with me.

Colchicine

Anti inflammatory

Cortisone

Perhaps you've tried it, but It works for me.

Cut out dry wors, biltong and up your vitamin c. Limit your coffee to 3 cups per day.

Take citro soda at night before you go to bed.

Eat lots of brocolli and asparagus.

And drink lots of water during the day. Like 2-3litres

Anything that increases uric acid levels

Cut back on all red meats, beef obviously, lamb and pork.

Brandy and coke was my worst culprit. Red wine can also cause it.

Agreed

Just generally a healthy lifestyle

I suffer from ramdom gout attacks. Few and far between but bloody vicious when they attack. It is horrible. I tried Colchicine but felt ill from the tablets.

I then discovered this from a local pharmasist. Sorts it out within an hour. I always keep a bomb available and at the slightest hint of an attack, I take a bomb.

But I really dont like taking tablets. The chap from my local canna shop has now given me a cannabis product to try. He says that I will never have an attack again. post-16512-0-53745500-1572773462_thumb.jpeg

Went for a shoulder op a fews ago. Doc reckons I'm full of gout. Even showed me on the photos of my shoulder the gout that was there.

I've never had a day's pain in my life.

What's the feedback on the cannabis meds, Vetseun?

I’m confused here. OP says high protein low carb. I thought that in the absence of carbs / sugar the body uses ketones as an energy source. This requires more fat than protein?

What I am trying to say is surely OP has ratio’s wrong in diet. Needs to lower the protein and up the fats. Pretty sure that will also reduce the gout issue.

The body will use whatever its given. ‘High protein, low carb’ is also a thing... It is however not without its complications and risks...

Gout, my nemesis.... used to suffer severely and started a regime of daily checks to determine what was causing it. Kept logs of all foods eaten and did a test each morning. Eat or drink whatever I never got it under control. Years of attacks with pain and suffering until one day I bit the bullet and asked the doctor to be put on Puricos.

That was around 7 years ago, only one attack since and only because I forgot to take my daily dose for a few days running. Some of us are just genetically predisposed to gout, for us puticos is the answer.

Gout is the worst disease known to man, debilitating when you have it regularly.

You have lost your weight.

Time to go back to a healthy WELL BALANCED diet.

Long term high protein diets have bad side effects. Your body needs the fibers in your diet. Both soluble and non soluble.

Don't believe peddlers of fad diets. No matter how many biased internet studies they copy and paste.
