Rockshox Monarch RL 50 Hour Service Kit

Hi there

I intend doing an aircan service on my Monarch RL, so went and bought the 50 hours service kit which includes some oil and grease...

My question is, there are around 8 or so various seals yet the aircan service only requires 3 - 4 seals to be replaced, what are the others for?- Are those for the Spez/Trek/Debonair models or do they include the damper service seals also?

Cheers

there should be two solid white rings , two spilt white rings , one large Q-ring , one small  q-ring , the scraper , a green bumper and then 5/6 large orings

one of the large o rings goes in the top eyelet , the rest you won't use cause they're intended for debonaircans

EVERYTHING i mentioned before the large O-rings HAVE to be used

That looks all what I have. Hopefully when I strip the shock (part by part) I will be able to see which o ring I need from what comes out? There is one large/thicker o ring and 4 very similar thinner but same diameter o rings.....

Another question if I may....?

I have a Monarch XX which is supposed to take a hydraulic lockout which I don't have....how difficult is it to convert to manual lockout and how tough will it be to get parts? I would look for a roached shock where I can scavenge perhaps?

Cheers

If you start to struggle, stop everything and take pictures of the shock apart and the kit packed out

I'll explain where everything goes

I can't provide a definitive answer on the XX remote cause some use a different cam and remote assembly some need a whole new eyelet so it's quite a ballache to figure out from here which you need

Alternatively there are specialists in cape Town, pe and Pretoria if you struggle with the service

Not sure where you stay but any LBS should be able to sell you a kit I would have thought? Got mine from Sheldon at Cycles United near Eagle Canyon...

Slight hi-jack, where can I get a service kit for a Rock shox Sector, bike is a 2015 Scott Genius.

You can scavenge bits from an RL if it's of the same era, if you want a remote chat to Cogent.

Also, by the time Monarchs start losing air it's usually time for a damper service anyway - when you've got the can off, compress the shock with the eyelet end facing up. If it makes squelchy noises, take it to Cogent anyway.

Ignore me if you have only put 50 hours on and you're actually sticking to intervals, in which case you deserve a crisp high 5.

Yip, good advice...before I start doing anything on my car or bike it's out with the camera.....

Want to avoid specialists as I like doing my own stuff and money is tight....did my fork uppers last year and it went well but this is more complicated and the RS service manual isn't the clearest as according to them aircan service is:

  • Air can dust wiper seal
  • 2 backup rings (white)

Then it gets into Damper Body Service so my understanding is that you need to do that too as there seems to be the right amount of seals, rings etc...but then you have to replace a large volume of fluid which ISN'T in the kit and then you remove the compression ball ect and there isn't a compression ball in the kit.

Seems to overlap air can service and Damper Body Service?

Yeah I could take it to a specialist but it costs massive and I'm pretty good at mechanicals (only take my bike in for wheel/spoke issues....)

It holds air pretty well but its done well, well over 50 hours...I use Brunox on front and rear at least 2-4 weekly and keep things very clean...

Brunox doesn't replace a service, and even if it did it would do nothing for your damper.

Get your hands on a full kit and an inflator and do the whole lot. Service is way cheaper than replacement.

Yip, will do. By inflator you mean adaptor for Shock pump?

What I must say about Brunox is that from new my fork seals werent the smoothest ie in compression it would be a little "shuddery" almost like they were dry and grippy...Cycle Lab put some oil down past the seals, that didn't help but Brunox solved it and that's why I still use it. I did my uppers well beyond the service schedule and they weren't too bad.
