Hi, bar ends seemed to be the in thing a couple of years back but now is almost unseen, it did, or at least I thought, offer a bit of play for the rider to alternate posture, why have the dropped off the scene...........?

I'd imagine it has got to do with the advent of longer handle bars and riser bars..

The bar ends mostly provided additional leverage for the narrower, flat bars..

Also, with more and more bars being carbon, I would think the additional leverage the bar ends provide, may make for breaking your carbon bars a lot easier..

They were popular in the days of long stems and narrow bars and they did offer alternate positions for your hands, but also some fantastic opportunity for hooking trees etc on narrow single track.

They are out there still, I love them as they offer much needed rest with alternate hand positions.

The main reason why they are not used is because of fashion. someone decided they don't look cool enough, all the pros went along and now they are ridiculed.

I still have on both MTB's. They both small and not the old bulky ones. I spend a lot of time one the bar ends.

These are what I have on my 29er

Bar ends not cool......... I disagree, its a comfort thing. Yes there is a chance of hooking the bar ends on passing items, but my response is, be a bit more careful. And the knowledge you are riding on the edge of total disaster adds to the spice of the ride.

I passed caring about what was cool and what was not a lot of years ago.

its amazing just how liberating it is to stop caring about cool. life becomes so much easier and happier. this is one of my favorite parts of getting old. not giving a sh.t

Bar ends are like saddle bags on a road bike. No matter what the benefits are, people don't use them because they are seen as "uncool."
