Cape Town Cycle Tour 2021

My offer is that I will ride with anyone of my family doing it for the first time, no matter how slowly.................and then I thought that I may have a spot of trouble keeping up if some of the youngsters take me up on the offer!

I have done about a third of my rides riding with family members and a GF or so in my younger days doing their first one.

Memorable ones were the short one with my Sister-in-law and just popping under the 7h mark with my nephew who though playing first team water polo meant he was fit enough.

When the youngsters start challenging you, you can use the technique I perfected with my brother. Push hard and ride him off your wheel once or twice.  When he complains,  suggest that it would be easier for you keep an eye out for him if he were in front of you.   Sit on his wheel until you hit Three Anchor Bay and beat him in the sprint.

Anyone enter today, have the money come off your credit card and receive no email confirmation of your entry?

The email often only arrives the next day. If you got the "payment successful" message, just relax and wait. If nothing happens by tomorrow, then phone them. I had a hiccup with payment and they sorted it quickly over the phone.

This is a given - aiming for a Top 3 finish at the wine tasting afterwards...

Wonder if we can include Cape Point vineyards on our second lap?

Not sure you can "legally" do it. Even as a passenger. They will be too young. But always worth asking when the time arrives. There have been people ask before to relax the min age limit(think it's 12 at the moment) for passengers etc. Not sure if they came right. A mate of mine asked for his lightie(think he was about 8 at the time) but on a tandem and they wouldn't budge but a passenger they may be more lenient. There was a guy who towed his paraplegic son but I don't know how old he was.

I would be interested to know what they say so do keep me posted in 2 years time. I would be keen to tow my kids as passnegers.

From the site:

1.1. To partake in the Cycle Tour, riders must in the year of the event turn:

1.1.1. 13 (thirteen) years old; or

1.1.2. 11 (eleven) years old if riding on the back of a tandem with an adult.

Thanks, I wonder if they allow younger kids who are being towed? So not a tandem, not actually peddling.

I was lucky enough to start when the minimum age was still 6.

It was not long after I had done a few they changed the rule on recommendation from Tim Noakes. He said it's too far for a kid under that age. He even kakked my toppie out for "destroying his son's sporting future". He reckoned that before I finished school my knees and other joints would be so shot sport would be out of the question. Well here I am at 37 with 29 CTCTs to my name and still very sporty. My knees are still hundreds.

But just maybe if you had waited till you were 7 you could have added a TdF to your resume.....

Or, if like me, you were inspired by "The lore of running " you could have stuffed knees like me....

I didn't know that Noakes was still a 'thing'. I also saw a Orthopedic specialist in my formative years who insisted to my mom that my knees were done for from all the surfing and athletics I was doing at the time. I'm 45 now and my knees are still working fine. I ride some seriously janky stuff and they are holding out fine. Sometimes I have to wonder about these so called specialists. The only thing they seem to specialize in is fleecing.

Still an ongoing debate ...

"Exercise" vs "structured training" .... and from which age.

One of Maritz's class mates at the age of 7 was riding tandem with his dad. They regularly do way in excess of 100km per ride.

Yet his main sport is rugby, so dont cycle weekly.

One of the local coaches does "skill training" and trail rides with the younger kids. Only from about 12 year old will he start race coaching them ... apparently 3 hard sessions per week could be bad for the developing bodies of the younger kids ...
