Tsogo Sun The Cullinan showing it's real colours.

Just received the message that the not used post Epic accomodation will not be refunded "as per their cancellation policy". This was an expensive booking as for many international riders it was the only way to be able to get from Val de Vie back to Cape Town (without spending huge amounts on taxi's that can fit the bikes). So that's why you book this expensive room. And then: no refund. What a crap hotel chain. I do hope this is the last time this hotel will be used and that the Epic will take extra care of reading the small print and cancellation policies.

I for one would be interested in hearing how the hotels/race organizers deal with sort of situation,..

Especially hospitality associated with an event such as the cape epic

Sorry if this is insensitive to the OP, but I'm fairly sure the Cullinan have 99 problems and refunding Epic riders aint one of them...

I disagree, sure overheads come first, but hotels ripping of international guest on a techniality outside of the guests control should at least be in the top 10..let's not forget, they are not an old dorpie hotel that sees guests once or twice a month.. The sun international group is not exactly small fry,....

With that said my condolence to the kerzner family..

You are welcome to disagree, let's see the state of the hospitality industry after this is over and revisit this thread again. I would be extremely glad if you are correct and I'm wrong.

I think it is a good time for the OP to rant about Tsogo Sun, because when this is all behind us, there may very well not be a company left to complain about. The airline, travel and hotel businesses are not going to see recovery for a year or 2, perhaps longer. The size of the company is not a guarantee of survival, sometimes it is a case of the bigger they are the harder they fall.

OP, the hotel industry still has running costs like salaries to pay, maintenance to perform and running costs that they committed to for April, exactly the same as Epic.

Your Deposit (especially if it's for 1, 2 or 3 nights) usually allows the Hotelier to afford the running costs and commitments, the other half is what they 'earn'.

I get your frustration, but your couple of grand is allowing the chain to afford to pay their staff during this tragedy.

Look at it as doing your bit for the poor community.

You can afford it if you can afford to do Epic. Let it go

Ja, most fair sized venues (and to a degree the small ones) all rely on conferences and teambuilding events etc for the bulk of their turnover (large group bookings)...I doubt too many companies will have the money or inclination to start straight back into having conferences etc once we normalise again And the smaller venues rely on Easter holidays and long weekends to get income to cover them through the quieter winter months. All of that is gone now.

Tough times ahead indeed for hospitality and the conference market and the average Joe that make up the workforce...

Sun international and tsogo sun are two different grouos of hotels, and both operate very differently. Just an FYI.

Only way to get from Paarl to Cape town is to rent a hotel room in the CBD?!

My sister in law is the GM at a very prominent hotel in Stellenbosch. Salaries have been cut to 50% but pension contributions continue. THey've lost millons.

Ok so the owners aren't short of a few bob and could probably carry salaries for an amount of time but this is the impact this pandemic is having.

Yes the wealthy aren't going to give up their wealth for the wellbeing of others so the only people who lose out are the workers.

I understand the rant and I empathise. I'm conflicted around how I should feel or what stand to take here.

I've heard that all staff at Tsogo Sun have had their salaries cut by 40% for the next three to four months. Don't it? Resign!
