Stephan Posted April 10, 2020 Share I am in the market for a new MTB and have been looking at supporting South African brands (even if in name only). Main focus is trails and the odd sday or multi-stage race. Not competitive - but giving it my best. Anyone any experience with the Momsen VIPA Trail 2? Built quality, parts, support, etc.? How does it compare to the Specialised Stumpjumper COMP Carbon ? Other South African brands available in this price category?
Eugene Posted April 10, 2020 Share Have no knowledge about the Vipa, but ppl are raving about the new Titan Cypher. That's also an SA brand. Stephan

Super Sywurm Posted April 10, 2020 Share I always said I will never ride a Titan, until I saw the 2020 models. I am now considering one.

Super Sywurm Posted April 10, 2020 Share Thanks. I did not know this. Thought it is a Merida spin out?Why did you think something like that? I also recently learnt that Titan is an SA brand.
Nick Posted April 10, 2020 Share Thanks. I did not know this. Thought it is a Merida spin out? Titan is part of the group that also distributes Merida in South Africa. Other than that, the brands and bikes are completely separate. Stephan

Captain Fastbastard Mayhem Posted April 10, 2020 Share I emailed a query to Merida and I emailed a query to Titan a week ago, the same guy replied. And? The Titans are their own bikes, and the Meridas are the ones that they import. That they have the same staff for some of the functions is just an operational efficiency. Jewbacca Posted April 10, 2020 Share Cliff Beckett does the designing at Titan. He is a super fun dude who most Capetonians will have seen on the trails or know. He is great. Buy the Cyper 120mm. The Merida 120 has a really slack seat angle and wile it is a rad bang for buck bike, the Cypher ticks more boxes. The Vipa Trail is quite short, so you need to size up or it feels cramped. The more I think about it, if I was in the market for a new bike I would definitely buy the cypher. Mostly because I can afford a Pyga...... If you have the cash, check out the Pyga Stage or Stage Max (same bike, just different shock and fork lengths, that give you the travel differences. But a 2nd hand Stage costs more than a brand new Cypher....... Captain Fastbastard Mayhem and Stephan
Stephan Posted April 10, 2020 Share Thanks for this - very informative answer. Pyga is really nice, but as you say a bit expensive. There is a lot of Cyphers, Pro, Elite, Expert, etc. Will definitely look at them. Prefer a bike with the back shock in straight line / horizontal. Just seem less 'rerouting' of forces.... But I am no expert.Cliff Beckett does the designing at Titan. He is a super fun dude who most Capetonians will have seen on the trails or know. He is great.Buy the Cyper 120mm.
