I ride with First Ascent Liners and a not so heavy full fingered winter glove....when (if!) it starts getting hot you can just remove the thermal inners and keep the lighter outer glove on...

I am keen to hear the responses. i have a pair of neoprene Castelli gloves (diluvio) that work great till around 5 degrees. I wore these with a pair of inners yesterday and it did not work...

I've tried wearing my motorbike winter gloves too, but they're not terribly effective without heated grips.
Would love to hear options. (currently waiting close to a month for Bike addict to send the FARR winter gloves I ordered)

Also following this, I was looking at the First Ascent Tech Touch Two gloves for my dad and myself but cant seem to find any reviews.

I am also looking for toe covers, any suggestions?

Thermal inners with -5 outers both from Decathlon. For really cold days - Briko's.

I was very keen on the FARR winter gloves, but a mate of mine bought a pair and was very disappointed with them.

I use surgical gloves underneath my regular full finger gloves when really cold. Just remove once the world defrosted. Then layers, pair of checkers plastic over the toes (over the socks) on the inside of my shoe.

To get hold of proper winter clothing you'll need to look abroad. None of the local brands brings in the proper Europena winter line of clothing. Assos does Spring and Summer. Our winters are typically too temperate to justify containers of Winter kit that sits in stock for years and then has to be sold off in the :what do you on sale thread".

What I would suggest is:

1) Merino Wool long sleeve base layer (https://www.mountainmailorder.co.za/apparel/men/base-layer/)

2) Long sleeve thermal jacket (https://www.castelli.co.za/collections/arriving-soon-20-may-2020/products/castelli-fondo-thermal-ls-jersey-black-red-3xl)

3) windshell Gillet

4) Goretex Windstopper gloves like these : https://www.castelli.co.za/collections/arriving-soon-20-may-2020/products/castelli-perfetto-light-long-finger-glove-unisex

If you cand find the SealSkinz versoin they are superb, made from merino polyester blend with a permeable membrane inside the glove.

5 ) Socks : https://shop.touratech.co.za/sealskinz-waterproof-breathable-socks-18007.html.

They're quite a bit thicker than normal so may require you to size up on your shoe.

Velotose is not suitble for mtb.

Gotta agree with the above two posts, the spring/autumn stuff from Europe does the trick. It is expensive, but if you have mates living in the UK who occasionally come home for a visit it is worth getting it shipped to them.

I have played the long game on this type of stuff, bought it when on special and got mates to bring it. The upside is that it lasts for years and years as you only use it for a few months a year. My gloves and one warm jersey/jacket (Castelli) are now 7 years old and going strong.

Recently (6 months ago, long game) bought a DHB jacket, Wiggles house clothing brand. Used it for the first time this weekend with only a merino base layer and was warm when it was 0 degrees out. Price compares well with local stuff if you can avoid the import duty.
