Does stuff like this also bother you?

What does bother me is when some of these traders unknowing to you begs and cries about please helping them and if you please can hold something etc or begs for discount with some sorry story and then since it is not a huge issue about the bit off the price or meeting halfway to nowhere you agree AND THEN they sell for a higher price the next day.

Second issue is these resellers or bikeshops that sell items on here and state the condition as "hardly used" or similar lies and when you get the stuff it is in much worse condition than you expected and they are adamant the condition is how they stated. Frankly most of these have been too little value to have made huge difference about making a huge fuss or court issues etc. - schoolfees.

Is the same reason I do not negotiate anymore than I feel like or not at all and further more you pay for shipping or collect and frankly I dont buy from these resellers once they re-sell items. I could name a few very famous ones on here but these days you then could have a loss of income lawsuit on your hands...

What an arb post.

Anyway, could be from dead/end of line stock. There are a couple retailers who have changed hands over the years and will have offloaded dead stock at some point.

There was actually also a bunch of Spez stock donated by a US retailer as a goodwill gesture to Botswana/greater Africa as a goodwill gesture. It found its way onto the grey market in SA, not ideal. The guys involved weren’t aware and quite likely out of pocket as well. The affected parties were put in touch, presumably the issues were resolved and people moved on.

Its a *** thing to happen and occurs more than many people think. Nearly got caught out years back in a similar scenario. Was approached with a line of gym/exercise equipment. Turned out it was actually destined for an NGO working with peace keeping projects.

Absolutely. The other commenters on here who believe that this scalping is a victimless crime are missing the fact that items are sold that haven't been  checked properly and resellers (many of whom don't even ride) do not have the skill to properly analyse or fix. I have a few friends now who have bought or almost bought broken items advertised as being in good condition. It's all fun and games until that part is a fork or a frame. The total lack of accountability or oversight on this forum means that there are zero repercussions.

Surely people miss-selling broken items as being in good condition and people re-selling bargains at higher prices are 2 completely different issues? I sure we can all agree that the first is wrong but its not the same as the latter.

I sense that your logic will have little impact.

Sure, but they're the same sellers, and it's the same culture, and the same forum with essentially zero application of any rules.

You mean to say something like being able to comment on adds would be a positive step in the right direction?

A younger friend of mine baught a specialized helmet, specialized grips and bartape for next to nothing at a lawnmower shop in Randburg. The owner of the shop told him that they got all the stock from Botswana, everything was ment for development riders in Botswana. I dont know why they have it in their possession and why they sell it for cheap. Its not like its old stock or anything. The whole story sounds unethical to me.

They had a lot of stock in a picture I saw, so my brother and I went and had a look. There was nothing left when we got there. The owner told us that someone baught everything from them and was going to resell it in his shop or facebook marketplace.

The same happens here on bikehub. Whenever a good deal comes up, then one of our beloved bikehub tycoons will buy it only to resell it. Ive seen 3 negative reviews before where a seller complains because his bike is being sold for way more than what he originally sold it for.

Im sure the majority wont agree with me but thats fine. I just want to share with you guys how I feel.

Amen. Saw a bike for sale on FB Marketplace at a super price, made contact with the buyer to structure a deal. I open my texts the next day and the bike had been sold already. Lo and behold it appeared on FB Marketplace at a 50% margin (from a well known buyer seller)!

Free market and all that, but I was rather disappointed.

“While there is a lower class, I am in it, while there is a criminal element, I am of it, and while there is a soul in prison, I am not free.”

― Eugene V. Debs - 19th century American socialist.

Weird that anyone could ever think like that.

I tend to underprice things I put up for sale, both here and on avforums. I like giving my kit to someone at a good price because I know how I feel when I something I like at a good price. But twice here I have been "caught". My first mtb, an entry level momsen I let go at a very low price. I was naive about the well known second hand dealer who operates here often and he took the bike, didn't bother to have it picked up from the bike shop I asked to pack it until I chased him to do so. Not very satisfying because I like the thought that it was going to someone who would value it and who was pleased to get a good price.

The other one was my Garmin computer I sold. To his credit the guy who took it emailed me two days later saying he needed money suddenly and was going to sell it on at a higher price. Meh - different over on avforums where in general it seems to me that they value the kit more.

Ya it really bugs me when I realise I could sold the item for more but then console myself that I have enabled the addition of value and created jobs

To be fair - if the price is super and you like the bike - don't "structure a deal" - make the deal!

You make a good point, but don’t expect engineers to take that approach. I have “traded” with mecheng before. He is methodical, fair and relatively quick for an engineer 😙
