Chapeaux to JA, attacked; attacked again. Could he have been willing to lose it in the hope of staying away?

Fear of losing invariably leads to a higher chance of losing.

"The legs felt great and in the final I made the cut. This wasn’t planned. I went all out, I have no words. I thought of my little one on the final. There were many supporters for Belgium and they asked me to slow down. They weren’t sympathetic words but it gave me more motivation.”

I haven't been sure of how much I liked JA... Now I'm a huge fan. Those three attacks were daring, properly courageous, seizing his moment and it paid off big time.

What a thrilling race

The UCI has confirmed that Kigali will host the 2025 Road World Championships, marking the first time Road Worlds will be held in Africa.

I see Morocco also submitted a bid. It was earmarked for Africa. Did we (CSA) not even bother?

A week of world class riding in the Winelands would be off the charts

Public here are apathetic in terms of cycling, yes there will be a few faithfuls but that will be it. Rugby and soccer are of course another story.

Also big financial & state support needed, Even still Norway lost a lot of money.

Try catch up on a  few of the road races there in Rwanda: roads are mostly impeccable and the people go proper nuts over a road race, plus it will most likely be supported by the state to showcase the country, largely they got there $h!t together there although there is a strong arm style of leadership, which can be seen as a good & bad thing,

Sure, obviously Kigame has an ego that needs stroking. You don't put Visit Rwanda on your favourite football team because of the ROI.

BUT, this is the first I heard that Africa was allocated a definite hosting slot. Surely the conversation was had to submit a bid? Or was CSA to busy infighting at the time?

Who knows the process or or players... although it seems CSA are not the most together organisation right now to put it mildly. Remember that CSA fiasco that was the Tour of SA a few years ago? And nowadays more focused on 'national objectives' than doing anything meaningful for the top  SA cyclists.  If they did win a bid like this I would wince in dispair, as I did when SA got the FIFA World Cup. Only when the right people for the job get the job can we move forward.

Rwanda is interesting, been called the Singapore of Africa. They do seem to have a functioning civil society. Corruption low for the continent,

How close is this. What a ride by Stuyven who was the co  leader for the Belgium team, finishing an eina 4th out of the medals. The ride by Dylan van Baarle, humongous.

I felt for Stuyven.  His team had huge amount of pressure and they rode a stunning race.  Even Remco did his part 110% and showed his is a star for the future.  And then to finish 4 was a sad day I think.

The racing was top notch yesterday!

Only 65 of 193 elite male riders finished (just over 60% drop out rate).

The high drop out rate is because of the lap racing format.

I was looking at these numbers and wondering why this would be acceptable to the UCI and the countries that send riders. A number of countries sent only one rider and then he cannot or does not finish. Russia 5/6 , Ireland 3/3, Colombia 6/8, South Africa 4/4 not making it to the end. Unless there's a crash or something just get yourself over the line.

If I got sent to the world champs as a no hoper by my country , I would at least want to tell my friends, family and the cycling boss that I made it to the end. What am I missing ?

In lap racing you don't get to choose if you finish or not - if you're too far behind you get pulled off.

Almost all forms of bike racing have time limits and I suspect the time limits on lap racing are much tighter than stage racing.
