been riding a bicycle since 1975....I've never seen a failure like that you experienced with your chain.

Also never seen it before. But looking around the web cracked and broken rollers seem to be not all that unusual in motorcycles and industrial applications. One chain supplier lists possible causes as follows:

  1. Build up between chain and sprocket
  2. High shock loads or overloading
  3. Poor lubrication
  4. Corrosion

I wonder if a small stone didn't get in somewhere in this case and maybe cause the roller to crack? Hard to know. Could just be a simple materials defect.

Did a 40k ride yesterday and so far so good, no issues.

Hopefully you not planning on doing any races soon.........................because that is when its most likely to fail !

True !!!  Still recovering from some broken ribs, so no racing anytime soon.  I have a brand new chain that will go on as and when I get to racing again.
