Damn, Threads get closed down quickly these days!

My suggestion would be to make commenting on the classifieds a BikeHub plus member privilege. I would gladly pay for that, it would place a barrier on any random being a chop and any transgressors would have financial loss if their paid account is banned for stupid comments.

Honest question, not being sarcastic.

Why would you need to comment?

If the ad is dodgy, hit report and it gets sorted out by admin.

If the guy made a mistake, send the seller a message.

If you are interested and have any questions, send the seller a message.

I can't recognize a scenario where a comment is needed

I've also asked these questions before. I don't mind comments, but I struggle to understand the need/mentality for self-appointed hub-police to patrol the classifieds. Why would anyone devote their time and energy to it? If you're browsing/looking for something, why would you concern yourself with frivolous **** that doesn't even concern you?

There have been more than enough blatantly incorrect year model, spec issues, stating 26'er bikes as 650B bikes .... bikes noted as in excellent condition and then having badly worn stanchions, the list goes on.

As much as we have experienced users here, that when looking for a bike for themselves or friends, can spot these issues, there are also new or in-experienced potential buyers out there looking for goods in the classifieds. This is where they are at risk and a community platform that could highlight these issues up front will protect them.

Why are we only protecting the sellers interests on this platform.

A quick example is an add sent to me by a friend last night, looking at a bike for her nephew.

Link to the add: https://bikehub.co.za/classifieds/item/hardtail-mountain-bikes/496835/silverback-sola-3

The add notes that the bike was built by this seller with a lot of effort, time and money. It notes that the bike never saw a trail, it did about 1km and that was for testing. A couple of bikes shops are name dropped to give credibility as to where the person purchased the goods from.

Then you start delving into the pics to do a final assessment before advising her to go out and take a look or consider the bike.

See the stanchion damage

image.png.a1321d54424bf61958d506b78888272a.png

Note a closer view of the stanchion damage and that the fork is a remote lock out fork, but there is no remote fitted to the bike.

image.png.ec2d5795b35f502ca7254a2b8c4b4211.png

If this person spent so much time and money putting this bike together, then this person forgot a simple thing like sorting out the frayed cable when assembling. What else is a miss with the bike build that is not evident from the pics?

image.png.8df7a894fcf3b141f7f076e64ab674fa.png

This thing is a mess, and her nephew was really keen on getting this, but thought to run it by her (A long term cyclist) first ... she in turn ran it by me.

Would you buy this bike the way it is, based on a description that sounds all rosy! An inexperienced buyer nearly did.

How many new or inexperienced riders / future riders have fallen prey to adds like this?

Why

Maybe some people look out for other people.

It is called caring.

Personally I have learnt lessons at my expense buying second hand in the past, and would rather try and assist others from making the same going forwards.

Other people in turn do just not give a damned.

So I used to be a BH regular, less so now, although I still comment every now and then and browse the forums when I am bored.

Reason for being less involved - the forums are just boring now. But I don’t get the big hooha about not liking admin’s decisions… it’s just forums on the internet - get over it, move on, go ride your bike.

I've joined the hub in the 'old' days and found it plagued by users reveling in their anonymity and happily fueling a toxic environment. Almost all threads were riddled with knobs being knobs and were freely allowed to sour up the place. Never been a community and just like any other social media environment. I like and support the stand against certain behavior, good riddance.

I can remember that it was nice to see community members backing up sellers offering something for a good price, or something that was particularly niche or hard to find. It’s all very well for a seller to say things like “one-of-a-kind”, “great price”, “super rare item that you need for X, Y, or Z situation”, but having community members comment with feedback like “I’ve had mine for five years and love it”, “I spent three months looking for one”, “good value – if it was my size I would buy it now”, really adds value to the ad, supports the seller, and gives potential buyers more confidence too. Perhaps this is open to abuse by sellers posting under multiple accounts, but those who frequent the forums will get to know who is trustworthy and who has certain specialist knowledge. There are a few Hubbers whose feedback on items I would take very seriously.

Also, while there might be a few selfless members sending feedback or suggestions directly to the sellers (thank you!), it adds a barrier that I think would deter most members who would otherwise quite readily post a quick clarification or question in the comments.

Well, and if one person asks a question, the answer is visible to everyone, so no repeat DM's to sellers.

Ive reported multiple ads with incorrect info thats is painfully obvious but discreet enough to take a newbie for a ride

Most of them stay up and nothing seems t0 change and the people are just allowed to go on.

I can't be bothered anymore , i probably spend the same amount of time here but I'm far less engaged

That's why I rather PM the seller directly pointing out issues with their adds.  Most eventually do change/fix/update their adds.

I understand where you are coming from and appreciate it.

Can this not be resolved by reporting the ad or contacting the seller?

I’m not asking for “old” hub

i agree and agree to disagree

but I do feel feedback is essential

and as a service provider I only see the positives

All this talk of the old hub

How is Fabes doing, do you still keep in touch?

I have previously reported adds to admin with a 26'er being sold as a 650b. this add ran for a few days like this.

In private, when reporting to the sellers, there have been more than enough abusive / bullish replies by these guys/ladies, so it is really not worth it.

On smaller things like the seller accidentally adding an extra zero behind a price I often contact them and let them know. These sellers are always cool about it.

So been there, done that

I left hub long ago and asked for my account to be locked

many reasons, mostly my perception of the community and the change, and I stopped riding and felt I had nothing to contribute pre the “crash”

I asked via a member to ask Matt  to open my account purely for classifieds

i am a bike whore and I buy much more than my wife knows or much more than I should

every now and then I look at the topics

mostly race reports, or upcoming events

i know there is a thread ASKING/Begging admin/Matt to open the comments section

and many Hubbers asking for clear reasoning behind this

im not going to read N questions as to why we can’t comment, and I saw there are a few Hubbers “demanding “ response

my point is , MATT IF YOUR FOCUS IS SALES ????????????????Good for you bud, your pass time became something more, well done

but if u are genuinely only interested in a sales forum and u don’t care about delicate LITTLE TULIPS FEELINGS WHY THE VAAARK do u not allow comments, I have never bought a vehicle , asset, or used a service provider who didn’t give a **** about LEVEL OF SERVICE PROVIDED

so,,,,

Please report my lack of gramma and swearing enough for Matt /admin To tell everyone WTF or maybe I crack a PM /warning,

because I buy a lot and I get great service and great prices and just rating a seller to me feels wrong

its an experience (in my case ???? only been great) but all sales are not created equal

EVER

proper feedback is essential

Welcome back. Is your CAPS LOCK broken?
