Balooba Posted January 17, 2022 Share Hi all Asking for a friend (seriously). Can this be repaired and if so, what is the chances of it happening again? The rider is not a small fellow. Cheers
FondTF2 Posted January 17, 2022 Share My honest answer if that I think that that frame is toast. Sure that there are more knowledgeable hubbers out there so lets see what they have to say.
Jbr Posted January 17, 2022 Share I'm no specialist, but I would throw that frame away and find a new one to put my components on if I were him. That is a nasty one

Mojoman Posted January 17, 2022 Share Chuck it. I would not be happy riding that if it was to be repaired..... I wasnt too happy about the small crack in my (also Momsen😁) frame, it was welded...it failed... Edited January 17, 2022 by Mojoman

two hands Posted January 17, 2022 Share Frame is toast. Sadly. Also check that his seatpost is inserted enough (especially if he is a big guy!). If the end of the seatpost is only inserted into the seat tube collar or as far as the toptube junction the leverage of his weight being pushed back on the seat tube can cause the cracking. Nigel Basel Posted January 17, 2022 Share Definitely toast. Hopefully its still under warranty.
Bl4d3 Posted January 22, 2022 Share Aluminium frames go through a series of heat treatment steps after they've been welded. Welding up the frame without any heat treating will just weaken the surrounding area and the frame will likely crack again, and pretty soon as well. Best would be to look for a replacement frame unless you want to take a chance of a alloy pipe going up your bum. With that said, I've seen a few frames welded up and still going to years, but its a risk. MajG

Balooba Posted January 24, 2022 Share Thanks guys. We decided to start looking for a new frame. Not worth the hassle. ChrisF, _David_ and TheoG
