Neck Fusion

Dirty Twin

Recommended Posts

Had an EMG yesterday rather uncomfortable the doc sticks a rather long needle into your muscles and then starts proding around to test your various nerves.

My C5 nerve which is the one that lifts your shoulder is kinda damaged and had very little response to  the reflex tests as well.Unhappy

Going to have the MRI today hold thumbs that it is not all doom and gloom. Anyway the Doc was very optomistic and did say that I would be able to ride againThumbs%20Up

I too broke C5 C6' date=' C7 about twenty years ago. Did a ride on Saturday morning on my MTB and hurt my neck. The pain is really excrutiating and can hardly turn my neck.

I would definitely like to find out more about this procedure.

shaunh I trust that you have been to see a specialist regarding your problem, if not please make a plan bud you can't live like that as it is really debilatating and messes up your quality of life. There could be a pinched nerve and if you leave it to long you could do some serious damge. If they can get to it sooner rather than later you still have a good chance of not causing permanent damage.

Please go and see someone.

Well had my MRI on Saturday afternoon and it is not all doom and gloom. No surgery required YAY!!!!!!!!!

Is my neck stuffed yes it is. Can it be treated with medication yes definately.

Problem is that I have some really bad inflamation in the neck which is cauing the C5 nerve to be inflamed and react badly causing the pain.

I have some input on this as well. My better half had a back fusion done when she was 19........ A few years down the line she started getting the same symptoms again, and after various scans etc the doctor said that he has to do a fusion of the next two vertibrae. Me, of course being very sceptical decided that we need a second opinion.... After loads of research I found a Chiro that does treatments for people with these symptoms. Basically we went there 2 - 3 times a week, her spine would be adjusted and a special injection would be administered in the back. This herbal stuff lets the cushions in the spine restore themselves to some degree.

After a few sessions we were able to see a vast difference in her movement as well as a major reduction in pain to the point where it is only sore now and again. I subsequently hurt my back and from a MRI I had what appearred to be a slipped disk. I went for the similar treatment and today my back is fine.

She still goes to see him every month. I have heard of quite a few people that had to have fusions done in their backs or necks which have turned to this type off treatment with excellent results.

Thanks for the input Sabre484. My mate who is treating me is very reluctant to allow them to start with invasive surgery cause it always leads to more surgery. And he is adamant that he can treat it with medication to reduce the inflamation.

I started the meds on Friday already and there is a huge reduction in the pain almost to the point where I am only now and again aware of a slight twinge and that is only three and a half days of treatment. Some of the  drugs are supposed to cause drowsiness but I feel as though I am ready to hop on the bike right now.

I have just got back from the Neuro, i already new the disc was out between the C5 -6 as i had MRI done in April. On that occasion we went the conservative route and let time try heal, it appears not to have worked as i am suffering again.

Neuro says that if it was purely pain he wouldnt worry about it but because i have loss of power in my arm aswell as numbness in my fingers and its pushing against my spinal cord he suggests that i have it sorted out with surgery this time. So i think im going to find another neuro and go for second opionion, only problem is these okes are booked for weeks and i cant handle pain much longer.

my disc was pushing into spinal cord by 12 mm with power loss in right arm and hand

physio/chiro can relieve pressure that dis puts on a nerve end, but when its pushing into spinal cord, it is time for neuro surgeon

When I was around 18 - I had a massive car accident in which I fractured my back. My vertebre was basically a triangle instead of a rectangle(t7)

The doc was insistant that I have surgery - I refused.

I do get the odd pain, but it goes away. I think I have just learnt to live with it. For me - I try avoid surgery at all cost.

I had a bike fall earlier this year - I managed to hurt my hand in such a way that there was allways pain - much like a pulled nerve. A friend of mine had a similar injury from a different cause around the same time. She went in for surgery and had it sorted - mine took around 4-6 months to totally heal.

I guess it depends if u r in a hurry or not ?

If my memory serves me correctly Dirty Twin had his accident at least 15 years ago and I know that he has had a hard time since then. I have a feeling he was still playing provincial hockey as well at that time and I wonder how much that could have made it worse. good to see that he is feeling better and hopefully he will be riding with me again soon.

It also depends on the injury.

Actually more so.!

I have had two cervical joints fused c5+6+7 after a heavy absailing accident.

The disc between 6+7 was broken off and bits were stuck between my spinal cord and the vertebra and the disc between 5+6 was bulging out like a balloon, but the worst part was one of the nerves had been displaced and was trapped between the disc and the vertebra - the pain was so intense I almost passed out on occassions.

I lost complete muscular use of my left arm within 12 hours of the accident due to the severe nerve entrapment and the neuro said if he didnt operate NOW, IMMEDIATELY, RIGHT AWAY, NO DELAYS,PRONTO,HASTA HASTA, there was a chance of the nerve been permanently damaged and the loss of use in my arm.

Anyway, recovery was slow, 6 months minimum but today I am back to normal, no after effects no problems nothing, I can run, cycle do whatever pain free.

...........but I dont absail anymore.!
