Read this regarding mtb tyres.

Shamus brought that out a while back. Makes for interesting reading and consequently I'm now running my tyres at approx 2 bar.

What they say is (not applicable to tar)..but only to dirt roads:

 

 

 

The smaller the tire (1.9) and harder, the more resistance, as the tire "contact area" (they called it patch) is longer.

 

 

 

The fatter the tire (2.1 - 2.4) with softer (like 2bar)

 

The fat tire "patch" is shorter .

 

 

 

The patch is when you sit on the bike, that piece thats flat on the ground.

 

 

 

They recon the wider and softer tire don't make a big patch because the air goes side ways as well in the fat tire

but wider tyres are heavier, what happened to the lighter wheels less rolling resistance theory ?
