Group Set Replacement?

quinton

Recommended Posts

I have a Shimano 105 group set and done about 8 or 9000km's with it.

What

life time should get out of a group set and when is a good time to replace

it.

It has been maintained pretty

well - regularly serviced and replaced the chain and rear cassette not to long ago

What's wrong with it? I've had my 105 set from 1999 and they are still fine. Chain, casette and BB have been replaced, but the rest not. If it brakes you replace.

Yeah, groupsets can last forever it seems if u look after them, no reason to change it if it aint broken - and shimano is quite tough!

I ride with campy though, but had a veloce 9sp groupset from 2002, rode with it until Feb 2006, then sold the bike and the guy who uses the bike still rides with that groupset - still going strong!

My 2003 105 groupset stands on about 18 000km. I've only replaced one chain and one cassette. Never touched anything else and it is still as smooth, if not smoother, then the day I bought it. I must say I'm keeping it very clean and very well lubed.

8 or 9000km's - that's still new!!!

The only things that'll ever need replacing are the bits that wear, ie chain, cassette, derailleur pulleys and chainblades. Everything else should last a very long time. I had an old 7-speed gruppo that must have done 50,000km easily.

Crikey - replaced my cluster yesterday (my roadbike was getting jealous of all the the talk of another MTB in the family), and practically had to donate a kidney for a Campag Centaur cluster... R1300 retail...

But now my road bike is a much happier bike.

Oh - BigH - don't bother replying....

Velouria, did you look at the BBB option on the cassette? A friend of mine uses one on his campag training wheelset, and reckon's it changes as good as the record one on his race wheels? And he say's he paid R350.00 for it?

Naah - didn't think of that - I have a Record groupset, and the Centaur cassette was all I could afford... next time though.
