Breedtsnek & Buffelspoort Dam ride

Recommended Posts

So after our mishap last Saturday (see https://www.bikehub.co.za/forum_posts.asp?TID=11676

) we decided that we needed a long ride prior to Swazi, so we made our way to

the Excel garage at Hekpoort early on Saturday complete with full AR backpacks

(weight 8 - 10kg's)

For those that are not aware, Breedtsnek is a dirt road that goes over the

Magaliesburg mountains and through the Magaliesburg nature reserve and it also

forms part of the famed MTB race, the Magalies Monster.

The first part is a gentle climb that ascends 253 meters in 21 k's. The hard

slog starts and the next 4 k's ascends 240 meters. Thereafter, a downhill of 5

k's where most of the ascent gained in the first 25k's is lost.

After the turn-off towards Utopia we headed out towards Zuurbrak or Zuurplat

(I'm not too sure) and there we had some undulating terrain which gained some

of the lost ascent and then another 7k's of downhill until we reached the

Rustenberg/Brits tar road. At this stage we had ascended 623 m but had

descended 692m !

Next followed a 9 k section alongside the tar road until we reached the

turnoff which led to the Buffeslpoort Dam. Again a short tar section followed

until the dam was reached and then we found an amazing piece of single track

that ran right around the dam and eventually linked up with a dirt road that

led back to the tar road.

Once more a short section of tar was navigated until we reached the Tree-Top

farm store where we had homemade Ginger Beer (R3.50), some fudge and seeing

that our backpacks weren't heavy enough we bought a couple of trays of

Avocado's for R10.

After satiating our thirst the long climb (6k - 380m) began. The climb back to

the top is a son of a bitch and one long slog. The reward is a spectacular view

and seriously fast downhill and then a descent of 20 k's all the way back to

the start.

I ride that road quite often, but have not found that piece of single track. Can you be mre spesific where it starts? Inside the Dam perimiter (where the club is)?

You have to enter through the dam gates & then follow the dirt road to the right. You eventually come to a dead end with a wire fence which you have to climb through (next to were they are building houses). The track starts from there and is pretty rocky but can easily be followed.
