.............during winter I dont really get too excited about going on the road during the week, so just content myself with a few spinning classes at the local VA clubs - and I visit several depending where I am at the time - but after doing a few lately I can honestly say from my experience most instructors know very little about actual cycling training.

Last night I must have done the most boring, useless, irritatinig, mind numbing class in all my life..................stand up, sit down, stand up, sit down, stand up, sit down and so it went.!!

Generally I find the first 10 minutes are wasted with useless finger stretching and the last 10 minutes are wasted with just as useless arm stretching and in between its a mind less boring series of spin fast, spin slow, stand up, sit down, "are we having fun", "lets see some smiles"............ and so it gos.Dead

Who actually makes up these stoopid programmes anyway, its not that difficult to make it interesting.

From now on I am not gonna waste my time spinning and will just do my own programme on one of the "life cycles" where I can get some benifit.

Widget I tend to agree. When we still stayed in Pretoria we were introduced to Spinning. Our Spinnmeister was the same Attie who's birthday is today. He was also the person who introduced M and myself to the joys of Tandem Riding. The fortunate for us was that all the people in the spinn class was cyclists and most of them were Tandem riders. People who you will meet on Saturdays during the club races. We joked together, dreamt together, bragged together, argued together and we were a very clsosely bonded group. That is real cycling spinning. Spinning in a Gym is canned spinning!!!!!!!

i must agree Widget....it does get boring, sometimes even so boring and irritating that i rather just get up and leave........the best is the extrmeley high cadence on level -50 and then they tell people to stand up.....i can hear the knee caps popping :(

I have a few favourite instructors at Faerie Glen:

Deon

Janet

Michelle

Bertus

Also a lady in the morning but i can't remember her name :)

But i do hate the up down up down ***.....being a mountain biker i also find the body position that they sometimes ride in does not help me with my riding, so i just adapt to suit myself.....at least i am there putting the time in....Shocked

so in agreement i stand with you Widgy

Must say, most instructors are not cyclists. Since then I don't go to spinning classes. thats why I battle it out on the IDT. I use my resistance/cadence/hr according to my program and varies it for the duration of the session. No boredom there, the worst is the 10minutes cooling down.cervelo2007-06-07 02:48:32

Feel the same Widget, if i want to do aereobics i would join an aerobics class. I like to train as i would similiar to if i was on the road. Some instructors do the popcorn move where you move up and down continuouly something you will never do on a road bike, its just too exhausting.

Fortunately there are VA instructors (Boksburg) that do what i consider a good workout.

It depends on the instructor of course....(obvious)....the VA I go to is quite lekker, doing the real thing and actually working my a$$ off! There is one chick instructor that is horrible.....maybe she is not fit but it can be VERY frustrating....wanted to go there and asked het if I could take over the class....LOL

The only reason that I spin is that i get home later in winter and it is too dark and cold to do a full 35km ride on my Trance!!  So i settle for second best, and plus, you score a luck if there is a hot lady in front of you when you doing the popcorn routine....

"bouncy bouncy bouncy"  hehehehe

nevertheless we will also be presented with instructors that aren't cyclists (not everyone can be perfect), but we will have to then make a choice....maybe judge for yourselves and if it is really bad, put in a complaint (justified of course) at your VA, since you are paying for that service!!!  I did and it worked, they changed the old bag over to a new instructor and he is fine for the job.

You can also rather not attend a class....even better and if the instructor is more approachable, pull them over after the class, and give them some constructive criticism, if they are worth anything and they are adult enough, they will take it and use..........especially if they AREN'T cyclists!!

How about a Hubbers IDT get together!!!

We can arrange to meet at a hubbers house (garage) with our IDT & Bicycles and have a social ride. Beers are optional!!

I am prepared to host the first one at my house in the South of JHB.

What do you guys think?

Buy a trainer and do it yourself. Spinning classes has never worked for me, the setup is never correct and I have found that quite a few people get injured while doing spinning classes. Muscle strains occur because of the wheels thats not free spinning. So with the up and downs you could strain your muscles. especially when doing the go as fast as you can thing they all like to do!!!!

Sure, in a way I agree Saffa G, but VA actively promotes the V-CYCLE classes as "alternatives" to actual training.

Surely then, they need to screen their instructors to ensure they have at least a modicum of knowledge about correct training procedures for indoor cycling training.?

It seems to me they just grab whoever is available and thats it , job done.!

Most of the instructors dont have a clue, Ive been to classes where they want you to stand and hold the bars with one finger, stand but dont move your upper body,or as scotty said do the pop corn routing, its ridiculous, its totally not normal in regular cycling positions or training.

Surely the idea of indoor cycling training is to replicate the standard riding conditions and body position as closely as possible.?

The funny thing is we proposed a product to VA a few months ago - a spin class to power (on the Cyclops PT300 bikes) - effectively a class for cyclists that would not only be structured around suitable intervals but also to each individual's power level - couldn't get a bite as they felt it was too specialised.

I really feel that there is a great opportunity for group suffering here - with a real training benefit.

Amen to that SaffaG

I dont see why BikeMax's product wont work in some of the more flagship gyms, perhaps VA should survey their users before making this decision on our behalf. In the classes i attend there are a number of cyclists that sometimes get frustrated with the class and end up doing their own thing.

I try to attend classes only with instructors that are also cyclists.  I absolutaly hate it if the instructor tells us to pedal backwards or to bend your knees so that your hips are below the saddle hieght and the pedal like that.  I mean who the hell cycles like that on the road?  It's mostly the earobics instructor type of spinning instructors that does that
