Shebeen Posted September 14, 2010 Share I've done boxing and just walking on(preferred). but haven't flown my bike for 18 months. just let the tyres down a bit(tubeless), and hopefully not explain the whole tyre not going to explode rigmarole again. I'm flying cpt to lanseria this week(kulula), any changes to policy I should know?
intern Posted September 14, 2010 Share Just roll it on. If you're worried, put some bubble wrap on the bits likely to be scratched.
pastapouch Posted September 14, 2010 Share I think it would be very difficult to keep control. Wings would also put extra weight on. Put it in a carboard box. Old bicycle or flat tv screen box. Put bubbble wrap on. Add extra protection... Best is get a hardcase(bit expeinsive though)
SteelyDan Posted September 14, 2010 Share Hard Case. Always. Even if expensive (less than the bike...)
Wannabe Posted September 14, 2010 Share Best is to contact Kulula you are flying with. The last time I flew (with my Mtb) I just deflated the tyres a bit, they (Kulula Lanseria) stuck some "Fragile" stickers all over it for me, and it was wheeled on (no bubblewrap or anything, but it is a Schwinn afterall )Heard somewhere that the regs regarding bicycles has changed to the tune that it must be boxed. Therefore, best to find out from Airline.
Guest Frail4Life Posted September 14, 2010 Share Hello Lilo First contact your Airline, you must stipulate you are taking Sports equipment (bicycle). You get additional allowance for the weight. If you just arrive with the bike, they may charge for baggage. Yes the only way is to box the bike. If you have stipulated on your ticket that you are carrying Sports Equipment then you have a stronger case if you need to Claim. Hope this helps. 29thumbs Posted September 14, 2010 Share Take up the crash position, cause it always falls on top of you..

Musashi Posted September 19, 2010 Share Remember to remove the bombs/ CO2 canisters. If you put it in the box with the bike, you're bike won't go no the plane (even though you might). It can't go with your check-in luggage or hand luggage.

Just deflate tyres a bit and remove CO2 canister. Use some bubble rap to be safe. Got a nice SCICON bike bag for my MTB recently from Bruce Reyneke - works very well if you want to be 100% sure – just take wheels off (they have a special compartment and fasten bike to grid structure inside bag. I got the soft bag (Aerocomfort Plus) - there is a hard case as well that looked fantastic but was too pricy for my pocket / bike...

IBiker Posted October 1, 2010 Share Hi guys Just to make sure, can you take the bike without a bike bag or case on a 1time flight, so you wheel it past check-in to where you board the plane or does it get checked in with your luggage as per normal just with a fragile sticker on?
