Ceres - A top international mountain biker taking part in the Absa Cape Epic Mountain bike race died early on Tuesday.

Australian James Williamson, the 26-year-old editor of the Australian Enduro mountain bike magazine, died in Ceres Private Hospital at 06:47 after his riding partner, Shaun Lewis, 28, was unable to wake him ahead of Tuesday's Stage 3.

Williamson and Lewis finished Stage 2 in 17th position and were 18th overall, just under an hour behind leaders Kevin Evans of SA and Austria's Alban Lakata.

The 722km race started in Wellington on Sunday and ends this Sunday at Lourensford Estate in Somerset West.
